With an area of over 9.6 million square kilometers and a population of more than one billion, one cannot help but imagine all the wonders that are offered by this vast territory. When performing a country study, many different aspects such as historical setting, social system, culture, economy, agriculture, industry, trade, transportation, science, technology, government, political system, foreign relations, public order, internal security, national defense, environment and geography all come into play. China, just like any other country in the world, can be studied in this fashion. The focus of this paper will be Chinese geography. When considering China's geography, one can take into account many different aspects and topics. In terms of political divisions, China is run by several administrative divisions all under the control of Beijing. In terms of

GEO 466/566: The Profession of Geography
The Middle Ages and the Age of Exploration
    The Middle Ages
The thousand years that followed the fall of Rome are often called the Medieval Period or the Middle Ages (400-1400). They were a time of diverse events where geography is concerned.
    • Christian Europe became isolated and somewhat intellectually stagnant
    • the Muslim world emerged in the Near East, blossomed, and expanded
    • the Vikings ranged the North Atlantic
    • the Chinese independently developed their own geographic tradition
    • most significant of all, however, theory retreated at the expense of practical knowledge in Europe

Christian Europe Southern Europe, after the fall of Rome, emerged as a stronghold of Christianity. The net effect of the new theology was that geographical ideas were viewed increasingly in light of Biblical scripture.
-a good example in Cosmas of Alexandria
-wrote Topographia Christiana in the mid-500s
-an attempt to prove that the earth conformed to the Bible
One legacy of the Roman era was the widespread use of Latin, a factor that aided the retreat of geography during this period.

This new course explores the transnational forces changing the lives of nearly a quarter of humanity, the 1.4 billion people of Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and the diasporic Chinese communities of East and Southeast Asia. This course is designed to be experimental in both subject and teaching methodology. In order to explore the political, economic and social processes of liberalization that have created this new era of the increased circulation of people, ideas, commodities and technologies across national boundaries, seminar participants must use materials and methods from many scholarly disciplines and traditions: political science, history, economics, anthropology, economics and media/cultural studies. And in order to study these increasingly mobile populations that often fall outside the boundaries of conventional area studies approaches, students must develop innovative comparative case study and survey methodologies. Specific seminar topics include (1) globalization and the history of political and economic liberalization; (2) nationalism, national security and foreign policy creation in the era of transnationalism; (3) consumerism and the emergence of a global market for Chinese cultural media; and (4) environmentalism and natural resource policy formation in China. Finally, in order to fully explore the transnational potential of the learning environment itself, students at Rice will utilize the Transnational China Project's pioneering web archive of advertising images to collectively analyze the new media of consumerism with students in Asia and North America.

    Shanghai Hosts Cross-Straits Geography Conference
A geography seminar involving scientists from the mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong opened Monday in Shanghai
Jointly hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and East China Normal University, the three-day conference has attracted more than 300 attendees.
Sources with the organizing committee said that academic exchanges have grown increasingly extensive among geography circles from the mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Hong Kong initiated the conference for Chinese all around the world in April of 1990 and hosted the second seminar with the theme of "China and the World in the 21st Century". In 1999, the conference was in Taiwan. The above activities have not only provided a chance for all Chinese geography researchers to communicate and exchange but have also promoted the cooperation between them wherever they are, according to the sources. The theme of this year's seminar is "A Century of Chinese Geography: Fundamental Research and Education Development", at which attendees will discuss Chinese achievements in the field and future development.
