The Landscape Paintings of Tao Wan and the Tradition of Chinese Scholarly Paintings
The Chinese Culture Center, a non-profit and non-political organization, was founded in 1980 to promote, preserve, and influence the course of Chinese-American Culture. Located in Trinity College in the Greater Hartford area, the center offers a wide variety of cultural events and social activities including maintaining the Chinese Language School, conducting the Youth Summer Camp, teaching dance, singing, Chinese painting, arts and crafts, and hosting an annual Spring Festival to celebrate Chinese New Year.

    silkqin
    Pronounced "chin" (stringed instrument) or "goo chin" (old stringed instrument), the guqin throughout its long history has been the musical instrument most prized by China's literati. They categorized it as one of their " four arts ", collected it as an art object , praised its beautiful music , and built around it a complex ideology . No other instrument was so often depicted in paintings , or so regularly mentioned in poetry . Because of the literati's fondness for writing things down, its tablature documents the world's oldest detailed written instrumental music tradition , allowing both historically informed performance (requiring use of silk strings ) of the many early melodies , and practical exploration of the relationship between Chinese music theory and music practice. In 2001 I moved from Hong Kong, where I was Artistic Consultant for the Festival of Asian Arts , to New York. Here my focus is guqin activities, including:

    New Perspectives on Chinese Culture and Society
    Application Guidelines The American Council of Learned Societies in cooperation with the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for Scholarly Exchange announces a program of support for conferences and publications on "New Perspectives on Chinese Culture and Society." The Program will award funds in support of planning meetings, workshops, and/or conferences leading to publication of scholarly volumes. This program is intended to support projects in the humanities and related social sciences that bridge disciplinary or geographic boundaries, engage new kinds of information, develop fresh approaches to traditional materials and issues, or otherwise bring innovative perspectives to the study of Chinese culture and society. Proposals are expected to be empirically grounded, theoretically informed, and methodologically explicit. The Program especially encourages proposals concerning pre-modern China. The program will support collaborative work of three types:
    • Conferences
      Grants up to $25,000 will be offered to support formal research conferences intended to produce significant new research published in a conference volume.
