  • First recorded settlement of Filipinos in America. They escape imprisonment aboard Spanish galleons by jumping ship in New Orleans and fleeing into the bayous.
  • First recorded arrival of an Asian Indian in the United States.
  • China is defeated by the British Empire in the first Opium Warresulting in Treaty of Nanjing whereby China is forced to payindemnities of 21 million silver dollars, cede the island of Hong Kong and open five ports to foreign commerce. As a result peasant farmersare heavily taxed.
A series of floods and crop failures in southern China lead to poverty and threat of famine among peasant farmers.
  • Three Chinese students arrive in New York City for schooling. One of them, Yung Wing graduated from Yale in 1854 becoming the first Chinese to graduate in the United States.
  • Strike of gold at Sutter's Mill, CA, draws Chinese immigrants to WestCoast to mine gold. Many arrive as indentured servants during theCalifornia Gold Rush. The bulk of Chinese immigrants come later as acheap source of labor to work the railroads, mines and in other industries.
  • California imposes a Foreign Miner's License Tax, collecting $3 a month from every foreign miner who did not desire (or was prohibited by law) to become a citizen. The purpose of this tax was to reduce the number of Chinese immigrating to California as well as to discourage Chinese from mining for gold (although they did not pose a great threat to white miners since they usually worked deserted claims).

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the achievements of Asian American men and women who've made a difference. Many people think Asian Pacific Americans are one single group, but they are really made up of more than 24 ethnic groups, that speak different languages and have their own rich history. Some of these ethnic groups include the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, Hawaiian, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Filipino people. Here are some outstanding Asian Pacific American women who definitely have Girl Power!

Gay Activism in Asian and Asian-American Churches
By Kwok Pui-lan
On May 17, same-sex marriage became legal in the state of Massachusetts. In the next several weeks, I will attend the weddings of several lesbian friends and colleagues. Since the Massachusetts state Supreme Judicial Court ruled last November that same-sex couples have the legal right to marry, the issue has aroused heated debates in the church and society. But the voices of Asian communities and churches in America have scarcely been heard. The media has provided broad coverage of Third World church leaders chastising homosexuality and the ordination of gay persons to the priesthood. . . What is under-reported is the growing gay activism in both Asia and Asian America, especially among Christian communities. When the Lambeth Conference in 1998 debated the issue of homosexuality, some African and Asian bishops spoke vehemently against it. The consecration of Bishop Gene Robinson as the first openly gay bishop has further divided the Anglican Communion. The media has provided broad coverage of Third World church leaders chastising homosexuality and the ordination of gay persons to the priesthood. It has created a monolithic impression that Christians in other parts of the world are conservative and uniformly against gay rights. What is under-reported is the growing gay activism in both Asia and Asian America, especially among Christian communities.

What Kind of Asian Are You?
Young Asians in America come in many forms. Below are the major categories. Most Asians fit into multiple groups. For example, Rice-boys can also be Fobs and many Tabs are Fobulous. The only groups that are never part of another group are the Twinkies and the Asian-Americans. When you see your Asian friend, you greet them with "Wassup Fob!" And if your Asian friend says something ridiculous, say "Fob please!" Of course, when a non-Asian calls you a Fob, that is grounds for a fight. Ahahaha...
Twinkie
  • Your significant other is not Asian and never has been.
  • You have few Asian friends, if any.
  • You are embarrassed at family events because you cannot speak your language and everyone has to switch to English to communicate with you.
  • You have no idea that the other types of Asians on this list even exist.
  • You think Hello Kitty is dumb and do not know what Sanrio is.
  • You are the only Asian on this list that does not know what Bubble Tea is.
