Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders
Approximately 4% of the U.S. population – over 11 million people – identify themselves as Asian Americans or Pacific Islanders (AA/PIs). The AA/PI population is expected to double in the next 25 years. About 54% of AA/PIs live in western States, especially California and Hawaii. 18% live in the Northeast, 17% in the South, and 11% in the Midwest. The AA/PI category is extremely diverse, with about 43 different ethnic subgroups. While the majority of AA/PIs were born outside of the U.S., a large proportion of Chinese and Japanese Americans are 4th and 5th generation Americans. Since the mid-1960s, the AA/PI population has grown rapidly with high rates of immigration from China, India, the Philippines, Korea, Vietnam, and Southeast Asia. Most Pacific Islanders are not immigrants, but are descendants of the original inhabitants of land taken over by the United States – Hawaii, Tonga, Guam, American Samoa, the Northern Mariana Islands, the Marshall Islands, the Caroline Islands, and Palau. AA/PIs speak over 100 languages and dialects, and about 35% live in households where there is limited English proficiency in those over age 13. Some subgroups have more limited English proficiency than others: 61% of Hmong-, 56% of Cambodian-, 52% of Laotian-, 44% of Vietnamese-, 41% of Korean-, and 40% of Chinese-American households are linguistically isolated.

I. INTRODUCTION
One story of Washington state is a story of immigration, but it is not the simple tale of assimilation or acculturation. Immigrants brought pieces of culture from their native lands to Washington state, where they melded them with pieces taken from American culture. Immigrants did not remain unchanged or melt into a common society, however. Instead, Washington is a mosaic made of different peoples coming together to create new lives in a new land. The Asian American experience is part of this mosaic. Thedocuments that accompany this essay demonstrate how Chinese, Japanese, and Filipinos came to Washington, struggled against discrimination, labored to earn their living, and created distinctive cultures and identities. These documents chronicle, in a small way, how some Asian immigrants became Asian Americans.

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are persons of Asian or Pacific Islander ancestry whose origins are from China and Mongolia to the north, Indonesia to the south, the Indian subcontinent to the west, and the U.S.-related Pacific Islands to the east. The six largest subgroups of Asian Americans are from China, the Philippines, Japan, Asian India, Korea, and Vietnam. Hawaiians, Samoans, and Guamanians are the three largest Pacific Islander subgroups. Although Asian Americans reside across the country, approximately 66% live in California, Hawaii, Illinois, New York, and Texas. Approximately 75% of the Pacific Islanders population live in just two states – California and Hawaii. Asian American population nearly doubled in size from an estimated 3.5 million in 1980 to almost 7 million in 1990, while Pacific Islanders population grew by 41% between 1980 (259,566) and 1990 (365,024).

As the first American woman of Asian descent to be in a President's Cabinet, Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao has always stated her commitment and strong ties to this community. Under her leadership, the United States Department of Labor (DOL) has made significant contributions to the advancement of the Asian Pacific American (APA) community through its human capital program, enforcement priorities, compliance assistance efforts and partnership activities. Opening doors to Asian Pacific Americans at the highest levels of government Secretary Chao is the first Chinese-American, and first Asian American woman, to be appointed to the Cabinet. She has appointed more Asian Pacific Americans to positions at the Department of Labor than any other Cabinet Secretary. U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao in
San Francisco Chinatown The Statue of Liberty began lighting the way for new arrivals at a time when many native-born Americans began to worry that the country was admitting too many immigrants. Some citizens feared that their culture was being threatened or that they would lose jobs to newcomers willing to accept low wages. In 1924 Congress passed the Johnson-Reed Immigration Act. For the first time, the United States set limits on how many people from each country it would admit. The number of people allowed to emigrate from a given country each year was based on the number of people from that country already living in the United States. As a result, immigration patterns over the next 40 years reflected the existing immigrant population, mostly Europeans and North Americans. Prior to 1924, U.S. laws specifically excluded Asian immigrants. People in the American West feared that the Chinese and other Asians would take away jobs, and racial prejudice against people with Asian features was widespread. The law that kept out Chinese immigrants was repealed in 1943, and legislation passed in 1952 allows people of all races to become U.S. citizens.

HOME June 21, 2005 Asian-American MTV MTV is planning 3 new channels aimed at Indian-Americans, Chinese-Americans and Korean-Americans. That's what MTV World is counting on as it introduces three new channels focusing on the growing population of young, acculturated Asian-Americans: first, MTV Desi, which will go on the air in late July; then MTV Chi, for Chinese-Americans, by the end of the year; and MTV K for Korean-Americans next year. The channels will not be merely tweaked reproductions of MTV India, MTV China or MTV Korea, three of MTV's 42 channels abroad. Rather, they will, like their target audiences, be hybrids, blending here and there and grappling with identity issues, mostly in English.
MTV Desi will serve as the prototype. Interspersed among Bollywood videos, electronic tabla music and English-Gujarati hip-hop , it will feature brief documentary clips profiling desis, comic skits about South Asian-American generational conflicts, interviews with bicultural artists and desi house parties, live. MTV Chi will mix up Mandarin rock, Canto pop and Chinese-American rap; MTV K will tap into South Korean hip-hop and the little-known but vibrant Korean-American pop scene.

The Asian American Federation of New York, a nonprofit leadership organization, reported in the profile that in 2000, Chinese American New Yorkers had lower incomes, higher general and elderly poverty rates, less education, and less command of English than city residents as a whole. The profile is one of a series of demographic portraits prepared by the Federation’s Census Information Center (CIC), a source of census data and analysis affiliated with the U.S. Census Bureau. These documents are designed to increase awareness of Asian American populations in the New York metropolitan area. The Citigroup Foundation and the C.J. Huang Foundation have provided funding to support the profile series. The Chinese American profile is available at www.aafny.org.

Should Colleges Have Quotas for Asian Americans?
By Jay Mathews Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, October 12, 2004; 3:47 PM One of the best parts of writing an online column is the conversations that grow out of answering questions from readers. What are at first quick exchanges sometimes turn into long dialogues, from which I learn much from people that I will probably never meet in person. One of the most interesting and persistent of my online interlocutors is Ed Chin, a physician who lives in northern New Jersey. Chin and I are about the same age, but have different backgrounds. He is the child of non-English-speaking Chinese immigrant parents and grew up in a low-income neighborhood of New York City. I was raised in a relatively prosperous suburb of San Francisco by parents who spoke only English, as have most of our ancestors going back several generations to Ireland and Scotland. Chin attended a very competitive New York City magnet school, while I went to an average suburban high school. We both went to Ivy League colleges, but he enrolled in medical school while I escaped to the newspaper business. About the Author
