RESPONSIBILITIES OF CHIN PARENTHOOD COMPETENCY RVW (.doc)
Chinchillas may look like a huggable lap pet but MOST will NOT sit still to be cuddled and held. Especially young chins, their energy level and attention span is comparable to that of a small child. The majority of IPCR rescue/ re-homing cases come about as a result of this misconception!
Don't make the initial investment unless you have acknowledged the following and are absolutely positive you will devote a chinchilla lifetime of time, affection, energy and expense:
average chin life expectancy is 10-15 years, they can live to 20+ years.

Type The Chinchilla is in the Mammal family (Mammalia). They are Rodents (Rodentia), and their family is called the Chinchillidae (Chinchillas and Visachas). Temperament Size About the size of a small rabbit
Height: 12 inches (30cm.)
Weight: 1.3-4 pounds (0.6 - 1.8 kg.)
The female is usually larger than the male.
Housing Chinchillas must be kept in a wire cage, or it will chew its way out. Be sure the wire is not painted or coated with plastic or the Chin will ingest this coating. The wire mesh should have spaces no larger than 1-2 inches (2.6-5.1 cm.) apart, - 1 inch (1.3-2.6 cm.) if you are breeding. Some cages have wire mess bottoms with pull out trays which make cleaning the cage easier. If you have a cage with a mesh shelf, be sure the spaces between the mesh are no more than inch (1.3 cm.) apart to avoid leg injuries. The chins cage should be big enough to allow him to get adequate exercise. They enjoy running around and playing and the cage has to be large enough for this, especially if you do not allow your chin much time outside of its cage. A chinchilla who does not get to run and play will be an unhappy chin. It is important to monitor the temperature where your chin cage is being kept. In the winter months it should be kept in a draft free spot. The ideal temperature for a Chinchilla is between 65-75° F (18-24

BellaOnline's Exotic Pets Editor Soft, Sweet and Intelligent Chinchillas Chinchilla are shy, intelligent, with a pleasant personality. They have an average lifespan ten to fifteen years. It is certainly not unheard of for them to live as long as 20-years. They are normally gray but can have many mutations of colors from white to black and many variations in between. They gray is the least expensive because there are more of them. The chinchilla originated in Chile, Bolivia, Peru, and Argentina and are of the Chinchillidae family. This family divided into three groups. The chinchilla belongs to the same group as porcupines and guinea pigs, the Hystricomorphic family. The two chinchilla species is the short-tailed chinchilla brevicaudata and the long tailed chinchilla bred for the pet industry of the species the chinchilla lanigera.
The chinchilla harvested for their phenomenal fur, which almost lead to their extinction. Gradually chinchillas were bred domestically saving them from the brink of extinction. Chinchillas have been on the Critically Endangered list for quite some time and are protected. Always purchase captive bred exotic (domestically bred) pets to protect the remaining populations.

CHINCHILLA CARE
The chinchilla is a domesticated rodent that originally lived in the high Andes Mountain region of South America. The chinchilla was hunted to near extinction in the early 1900's. Most of the chinchillas in the United States today are descendants of 11 animals brought to California in 1923.
The chinchilla is now cultivated in large numbers for its luxurious pelt. Over the years, the chinchilla has been the object of legitimate and illegitimate breeding schemes. In addition, chinchillas have been used for medical research. Chinchillas also are kept as pets. Initially, it is the chinchilla's beautiful coat that attracts attention; however, it is this docile animal's personality that ultimately wins over it's many friends.
Characteristics
The ears of the chinchilla are large, thin, and "bat-like", and the inner ear of the chinchilla is very large. Together, these traits are related to the chinchilla's ability to communicate over long distances in the wild. The incisors, or front teeth, of the chinchilla grow between 2 and 3 inches a year. The molars also grow throughout the animal's life.

FERRET CARE General Information and Characteristics: The domestic ferret has become an increasingly popular pet in the United States and other parts of the world in recent years. The domestic ferret, Mustela putoriusfuro , is a member of the mustelid family that includes otters, minks and skunks. Records indicate that the ferret has been domesticated since approximately 4 B.C. In Europe, it was and in some areas is still used for hunting rabbits and rats. Ferrets are lively, inquisitive, and comical in their movements. They expend a great deal of energy when they are playing and then sleep deeply for long periods. The life span of the ferret is five to seven years on average in the United States. There have been several cases of ferrets living to be over 10 years of age. Geriatric disease problems usually start at around three years of age. Many people are concerned about the odor of the ferret. Ferrets do not spray the anal gland contents as their relatives the skunks do and, once they are past the "baby" stage or unless they are very frightened, they do not release this material frequently. Therefore, removing the anal glands is an unnecessary procedure in ferrets and in fact does nothing to remove body odor. Neutering the pet, however, will remove 90% of the body odor satisfactorily. Both male and female ferrets that have been neutered will still have a slight "musky" body odor, but most ferret owners find it inoffensive. Ferrets generally do not need bathing; however owners who wish to do so should bathe their pets no more than once every two weeks with a mild pet shampoo.

FERRET Chinchillas Chinchillas are native to the Andes Mountains in Chile . They were slowly becoming extinct because of the value of their fur. Originally 11 chinchillas were brought into the United States in 1923 by Mathias Chapman. He established a breeding colony in California . All chinchillas in the U.S. trace their roots back to this original colony. During the 1950’s breeding chinchillas for “fun and profit” was a very trendy way to create a second income. By the 1960’s there were thousands of chinchilla ranches across the country. The problem with raising chinchillas for fur was that the animals were so cute many would-be entrepreneurs couldn’t bring themselves to "harvest" them. Most people today care for their Chinchillas as pets. Diet Chinchillas are herbivores. They are fed a pelleted alfalfa product. This should be supplemented with plenty Timothy Hay. Grains like oat groats, rolled oats, and wheat can also be given in limited amounts. Small quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables like carrots, apples, pears and bananas offer variety to the diet. A raisin or two once in a while is a great treat. Supplementing their diet with a daily multi-vitamin in their food is recommended Fresh water should always be available in a water bottle.

Huggable Pets Farm Chinchillas
Chinchillas are a type of rodent. They are originally from the Andes Mountains in South America. Chinchillas were originally bred by ranchers for their incredibly soft and thick fur. Now they are widely bred for pets. They can easily live ten years or more if cared for properly. Chinchillas make great pets. They are odorless, and because of their dense fur, can't get pests such as fleas. They are social animals, so if kept alone they will need some attention every day. They are nocturnal, sleeping most of the day, but they will adapt quickly to their human's schedule. About 90% of all chinchillas are standard gray but they can come in many different colors. All other colors are called mutations. Some color examples include Wilson White, Ebony, Beige, Violet, and Sapphire. Color mutations range in price depending on the rarity of the color. Cage
Chinchillas are very energetic and love to climb and jump so the larger the cage size, the better. Wire cages are preferred. The spaces between wires should be no bigger than 1 inch x 1/2inch. (Aquariums should never be used because the chinchilla can easily overheat in them). If the cage has a wire floor, the spaces should be 1/2 inch x 1/2 inch so that their feet can not fall through the wire.

[ PET OHANA ] COURTESY OF DR. TOM CHLEBECEK
Named Props because his ears resembled a propeller, this is Dr. Tom Chlebecek's first pet rabbit, the pet that inspired him to go to veterinary school.
Caring for rabbits,
chinchillas and
guinea pigs
By Hawaiian Humane Society When considering adopting a pet, most people think of cats and dogs. There are also a variety of smaller, quieter companions such as chinchillas, guinea pigs or rabbits available at the Hawaiian Humane Society and shelters on the other islands, too. Rabbits are classified as lagomorph mammals, while chinchillas and guinea pigs are rodents, but they are all similarly sized. Here are some tips for their care:
Rabbits need attention
Potential owners often underestimate the amount of effort that is required to care for a rabbit. These creatures can live for 13 to 15 years and are relatively fragile. It is recommended that rabbits be spayed or neutered to prevent diseases and overpopulation. Un-spayed female rabbits might become temperamental or aggressive and could develop uterine cancer. "I think the closer you can come to their natural diets, the healthier they will be," said Dr. Tom Chlebecek, veterinarian at Makai Animal Clinic in Kailua. "Wild rabbits eat grass in the summer and hay in the winter. Pet rabbits should eat a limited amount of pelleted food and free choice timothy hay, plus fresh greens twice a day and a tiny amount of fruit as a treat."
