P.C.T. HOME
Survey of Pet Animals in the Classroom, Purdue University
Pet Care Trust, February, 2000 The Pet Care Trust funded a project conducted by Dr. Alan Beck, Prof. of Animal Ecology, School of Veterinary Medicine, and Dr. Anthony Rud, Jr., Assoc. Dean, School of Education, Purdue University, to survey pet animals in classroom. In 1998, 1,999 surveys were sent to elementary school teachers in Indiana. A total of 428 responses (21.4%) were completed and returned. Most of the surveys came from teachers in small cities (71.8%), with the balance from farm areas or cities less than 25,000 population. Of this sample, 26.6% of the teachers kept one or more resident animals in their classroom, and 46% of teachers who did not keep resident pets, did allow animals to visit the classroom. A wide variety of animals were found in Indiana elementary classrooms. Mammals include chinchillas, gerbils, Guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, rats, hedge hogs and rabbits. The only birds found were parakeets, but reptiles included, anoles, iguanas, legless lizards, snakes (garter, corn and boa) and box turtles. Amphibians include frogs, toads and salamanders, while fish included goldfish, Betas, guppies and other tropical fish. Invertebrates include ants, butterflies, cockroaches, crickets, mealworms, hermit crabs, crawfish, snails, spiders and a sea anemone. Teachers responding to the survey discussed the benefits and the downsides of resident animals in the classroom. Examples: 1. With the death of a gerbil, the students mourned the loss by writing and drawing, and then a funeral was conducted where 5-6 students said something nice about the gerbil and then sang the school song; 2. A snake escaped from it's habitat and was later found in the principal's office.

Executive Summary
Pet food and pet care products sees slower growth
Pet food and pet care products in Portugal is expected to register an increase in both volume and value terms throughout 2004, although, compared to previous years and the CAGR (compound annual growth rate) during the review period, it presents a significant slowdown in the positive trend. Economic conditions in Portugal since the second half of 2002, and particularly during 2003 and 2004, with official statistics claiming a drop of two percentage points in per capita GDP, are likely to prevent a more dynamic performance in 2004. Still, the increase on 2003 is still considered to be a strong development, particularly compared to the performance of the majority of other markets in the same year.
A premium market develops
Over the review period, companies’ efforts to develop new and more evolved products, focusing increasingly on specific needs, along with educational campaigns to influence changes in Portuguese pet owners’ attitudes towards prepared food, resulted in a market fuelled by premium and super premium products. With lower volume than value growth between 1999 and 2004, the higher unit price of these products was the most important source of growth. A good example of this was single serve dog and cat food, where the convenience factor, together with food quality and flavour, resulted in it being one of the fastest growing categories in the Portuguese market.

Isn't he cute? Meerkats are in the same family as the Mongoose of which there are many different varieties. Meerkats live in family units in burrows (dens) that they dig underground. The Meerkat in the picture above is probably acting as the lookout for the den. The lookout duty is traded off among the adult Meerkats of the den so someone can alert them to danger at all times.

General Pet Care Feeding information 1. You should always feed your chinchilla once a day using chinchilla pellets. You should be able to find chinchilla pellets at your local pet store or even a mill.
2. Additionally you should be sure to have a water bottle readily available to your chinchilla which should be changed daily because the water tends to get dirty if you leave it in there for several days due to the chinchillas backwashing slightly.
3. We highly recommend that you purchase Chinchilla Supplemen t from us, because it provides many of the vitamins needed in your chinchillas diet.
4. Your chinchilla's teeth tend to get overgrown if they do not have something to chew on(which is why they like to chew on everything they see!) To prevent your chinchilla's teeth from becomnig overgrown, we suggest your purchase Hay Cubes from us. Exercise and Health 1. To keep your chinchilla in good health, we suggest that you get it out of the cage once a day and let it run around for a little while. Generally about a half hour to an hour is good enough to keep your chinchilla happy and healthy.
2. Chinchillas are generally more active at night than during the day which is actually good because your chinchilla will sleep while you're at work, and usually by the time you get back, he's ready to go.

http://drexotic.com/care_chinchillas.htm
Care and Feeding of Chinchillas By Christine Hancock Chinchillas make wildly amusing, playful, as well as loveable pets. A well-taken care of chinchilla can remain in your family anywhere from six to ten years or more. The average male chinchilla weighs between 400-500 grams, while the females can reach 600 grams. Chinchillas love to play, so they require lots of attention from their owners. Supervised playtime is the best way for you and your chinchilla to interact and bond. Since they love to chew and are extremely curious, check that electrical cords, toxic plants, or anything breakable is out of reach of your chinchilla. Grooming/Bathing
One unique characteristic of the chinchilla is their bathing habit. Unlike most mammals, the chinchilla does not require a bath in water. Instead, they take dust baths. A wet bath will strip the chinchillas fur of its natural oils which protect their skin and help regulate body temperature. A dry bath is done with dust that can be purchased at your local pet shop, or from most chinchilla breeders. For approximately ten minutes, every day or every other day, place a small dish of the dusting mixture in your pet’s cage. Sit back and watch as your chinchilla rolls, flips, and plays in the dust! It is always best to remove the dusting container immediately after a bath to prevent the dust from being soiled with feces, food, or bedding.
