    episode ADI-707 advertisement
Figure A Thane Maynard of the Cincinnati Zoo introduces an exotic animal whose very name still denotes luxury to many people: the chinchilla ( figure A ). Originally natives of Chile , chinchillas have been domesticated for centuries, today they're known to make excellent pets. These gentle creatures have the world's softest hair, which for centuries was prized by the fur trade. The softness has a less-than-exotic cause, though: split ends, which cause the hairs to feather out in order to trap air and provide warmth to the mountain-dwelling animals. A pet chinchilla requires special but far from pricey care in order to maintain its soft coat: it needs to take a dust bath every few weeks. The sandy environment from which they originally came provided the perfect way to knock off dead skin and get rid of parasites, so a caged chinchilla must have access to an ample supply of dust. (Pet stores carry special antifungal dust for pet chinchillas.) They also need plenty of room to move around, as they are highly active. And because they're very social animals, they absolutely must have a lot of interaction with their humans.

    CHINCHILLA CARE
Chinchillas are such a wonderful pet. Most people have no idea how lovable and cleverly smart these little animals are. This is not a pet to purchase if you are not a long term commitment person because a chinchilla has been known to live for 35 years. Most chinchilla house pets have a life expectancy of 15-20 years. You want to be sure that this pet will be loved and tended to for all these years. This is a new family member and it will need regular care and attention.
Chinchillas really are a special little pet. They have a cheerful disposition and are ready to play upon seeing you. To maintain good health a chinchilla should be on a regular schedule for eating, sleeping, time out of the cage for play time etc. You'll need to spend about 2 or more hours daily with your chinchilla.
Chinchillas are low maintenance and have no foul odors if maintained properly. Chins don't require shots from your vet. It is a good idea though to know of a vet that can treat your chin if it should get ill or have an injury.
Chinchillas are chewers their teeth grow throughout their life and must be worn down so be sure to provide safe nontoxic branches or pumice stones for your pet. Also remember when your chins out playing make sure those electric cords are not accessible because they will chew them !

    58. PA Chinchillas~Health And Care
Many people see their first chinchilla at pet stores and decide they’re so to pick up their first chinchilla knows the basic care their new pet needs.
    http://www.pachinchillas.com/care.html
Buying your Chin - Breeder vs Pet Store? I recommend buying your chin from a breeder rather then from a pet store. Generally when you buy from a pet store you really don't end up knowing too much about your chin. Pet stores can't tell you their age, sex or any other details about the chins they are selling. I think buying from a breeder will give you a best start with your chin as far as knowing details about your chinchilla. Also the pet stores are grossly over priced! Most breeders will send you home with some sort of starter kit such as some pellets, and dust. It is also a good idea to trust who you decide to buy your chinchilla from. Do research, ask questions, and go with your gut. But before you decide that chinchillas are just too cute and you have to have one, please learn about them first. Many people see their first chinchilla at pet stores and decide they’re so cute they buy it on the spot now realizing the type of care chinchillas need. Please do yourself and the chinchilla a favor and read up ask questions and do some research before you buy your first chinchilla. I like knowing that the person who comes to my home to pick up their first chinchilla knows the basic care their new pet needs. If you have questions then ask. Sex - Should I get a Male or Female?

**Acidophilus for a healthy pet** popular
    (29 votes)
The normal, healthy colon contains friendly bacteria (85% lactobacillus and 15% coliform bacteria). It is the friendly bacterial flora found in yogurt and is essential to the digestive system. When these bacteria are not in balance, flatulence, constipation, and malabsorption of nutrients may occur, all of which may lead to Candida. Acidophilus taken as a dietary supplement may help to detoxify and to rebuild a balanced intestinal flora. It is used for the prevention of Candida as well as for treatment. Acidophilus aids the digestion and helps to replace the friendly intestinal flora.

    http://www.house-of-chinchillas.de/care.html
Caring for a chinchilla means taking care for the pet itself and cleaning up the cage, etc. Chinchillas are very cleanly which like tidiness in there cage very much.
    * Cleaning plan
    Daily duties
Before feeding you should remove leftovers of hay which are lying in the wood-shavings. It can quite happen that the chinchilla eats the leftovers from the ground. But these leftovers can be soiled with urine and droppings so that the chinchilla can get diarrhoe.
Next is cleaning up the feeding bowl. If there are pellets left you should throw them away and fill up the bowl with fresh pellets.
If the dustbath is in the cage permanent you should weed out it every day
    weekly duties
    monthly duties

Once a month you should clean up the boards and climbing-branches, which are soiled with urine, etc. with hot water. The hair that was thrown away from the chins and is hanging in the grating should be removed with a shawl.
The golden rule for the chinchilla care should be: "Clean up the chinchilla cage just as you would clean up your house".
    * Pet care If your chinchilla has a nice home you should also watch its physical condition.
