Undergraduate Program
The Department of History was founded at National Chung Cheng University in August, 1991 with the twin goals of providing undergraduate education and cultivating talent in the higher levels of academia. By pursuing these twin missions, we hope to increase the understanding of history and contribute to society. We provide our undergraduates rigorous and comprehensive training, cultivate a broad range of their academic skills, and nurture their ability to conduct independent research. Our system of academic advisers and traditional academic spirit nurtures the entire person and strengthens each student's abilities. Undergraduates are required to take courses on Chinese history, world history, and the theory of history. Department majors must take 52 credits of required courses. A total of 128 credits are required for graduation. Aside from highly developed programs in Ming Qing history, Western history, and medieval Chinese history, our department is also strong in Taiwanese history and modern Chinese history. We offer courses in medieval Chinese history, political history, social history, religious history, ethnic history, regional administration, and historical geography. In conjunction with the Department of Chinese at National Chung Cheng University, we coordinate research on Dunhuang studies as well as the history of culture during the Six Dynasties, Sui, and Tang eras. Our program in medieval Chinese history is particularly strong.

The coinage of China has not really changed (until very recently) for the last 2250 years. With the exception of some spade, knife and bridge shaped pieces, most Chinese coins are cast bronze (AE), uniface, round and have a square hole in the middle. The odd shape of the 'ant nose' specimens suggest a substitution of the cowrie shell, once used as currency in China (see below). There is a tradition that they were inserted into the noses of the dead to keep out the ants. They may or may not be real 'coins'.
