Chinese, Korean, and Iranian ambassadors. The trade links with Central Asia provided the communities from the fifth to the eighth centuries with waves of new immigrants. One specific example of these links is from a discovery on the main stage of the route, Turfan, in Xinjiang. Many Chinese documents were used there to cut paper clothing for the dead who were buried in the Astana cemetery. Among them is a list of taxes paid on caravan trade in the Gaochang kingdom (Turfan) in the 620s. The text is not complete but gives a fairly good idea of the identity of the main traders in Turfan: out of 35 commercial operations in this text, 29 involved a Sogdian trader. In 13 instances both the seller and the buyer were Sogdians. That Western hour with features like a flower

Japanese History
In our department we study Japanese history from ancient times to modern times. The subjects for study cover a wide range i.e., political history, economic history, social history, history of thought, a history of life styles and so on. In our study program, we concentrate on developing in our students the ability to read historical materials written in old Japanese. After they have developed and obtained this ability, they choose their own topics on which to write a graduation thesis. This program also applies to foreign students. Therefore, at the very least, they must have already learned modern Japanese.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. Liu Tsung-yuan and Intellectual Change in T'ang China 773-819, by Jo-shui Chen. New York, Cambridge University Press, 1992. xii, 221 pp. $54.95 U.S. Liu Tsung-yuan was an outstanding poet, prose stylist, and thinker in mid-T'ang China, a period increasingly weakened by regionalism and factionalism but intellectually characterized by a revival of Confucianism in the midst of Taoist and Buddhist influences. Jo-shui Chen's ambitious study combines a comprehensive biography of Liu Tsung-yuan with a history of mid-T'ang intellectual lifeall in about two hundred pages. Continue article Advertisement
Chen's copious documentation is impressive on the whole, but there is one unexplained omission. The most primary source of the study is Liu Tsung-yuan's writings, and yet the notes contain neither the chapter reference nor the title of the particular piece. Unless one has the 1979 Peking edition of Liu Tsung-yuan's writings handy, it is difficult to locate the piece and read it in entirety, beyond the excerpts Chen cites.
