Local History in Early Medieval China Panel #2, Association for Asian Studies Annual Meeting, San Diego, California, March 2000.
Panel Abstract
This panel addresses local history writing in China in the second-fourth centuries A.D . Local history can be broadly defined as any sort of written material that is collected about an area with a limited geographical scope, as opposed to having a universal orientation; this includes many sub-genres such as annals, narrative histories, biographies of local men, and descriptions of local scenery. Material of this sort flourished in the late Han and Wei-Jin period. The panelists will explore three different significant aspects of local history: As an expression of separatism : The fractured political world of the Wei-Jin period suggests that local history represents a desire for political autonomy. To test this thesis, generic conventions will be examined for the way that authors conceptualized their local area and its relationship to other areas and the imperial court(s). As historical source materials : Wei-Jin local histories are an important source for contemporary historians of the period, and include some of the most intriguing and best-known accounts of people and events. It is critical to assess the origins, reliability, and adequacy of these materials.

The Mongol invasions of the thirteenth century, culminating in the subjugation of Baghdad in 1258 and the demise of the Abbasid caliphate, had an enormous impact on large areas of the Islamic world, which now experienced its greatest threat. These conquests were carried out under the command of Hülagü, a grandson of Genghis Khan, who assumed the title Il-Khan, meaning "lesser Khan," a subordinate of the Great (Mongol) Khan in China. The name Il-Khan (or Ilkhanid) is also used to describe the branch of the Mongol dynasty that ruled over Iraq, the Caucasus, parts of Asia Minor, and all of Iran, as far east as Central Asia.

From their capital at Tabriz, in northwestern Iran, the Ilkhanids maintained contact with such disparate cultures as China and Christian Europe, thereby invigorating the Iranian world with new mercantile alliances and fresh artistic influences. Following the death of the last Ilkhanid ruler in 1335, their empire crumbled and was replaced by a number of local dynasties.

It is arranged thematically following the general plan of the Internet Medieval Sourcebook . "Medieval" has been taken very widely - from the first-century (CE) Roman Empire until the 17th-century. Although "medieval" and "movies" might not seem to be a good fit and a lot of bad films have been made it is perhaps worth noting that they have gone together since the earliest surviving American feature film - André Calmettes and James Keane Richard III of 1912.

"I wish I were too. I read it a little as a duty, but it tells me nothing that does not either vex or weary me. The quarrels of popes and kings, with wars or pestilences, in every page; the men all so good for nothing, and hardly any women at all it is very tiresome:"
    Catherine Morland, in Northhangar Abbey
by Jane Austen How are historians to remedy the silence about women in many traditional accounts of history? This question has received a number of distinct answers. The first solution was to locate the great women of the past, following the lead of much popular historiography that focuses on "great men". The problem here is that just as the "great men" approach to history sidelines and ignores the lives of the mass of people, focusing on great women merely replicates the exclusionary historical approaches of the past. The next solution was to examine and expose the history of oppression of women. This approach had the merit of addressing the life histories of the mass of women, but, since it has proved to be possible to find some degree of oppression everywhere, it tended to make women merely subjects of forces that they could not control. On the other hand, historians' focus on oppression revealed that investigating the

The term South India refers to that parts of India South of the Narmada beyond the Vindhya and Satpura. An extensive forest called Mahankantra lay between the two parts of the mainland and was less ventured into by Early Aryans. This was followed by migrations to Dandkaranya (Maharashtra) Vidarbh (Berar) and indeed this affected other parts of the South. The Andhras had established a strong kingdom in the Deccan. After the decline of the Andhras petty kingdom was under the influence of the Guptas. This was under the influence of the Guptas. This empire declined in the early sixth century. These people had come into conflict with the ruler of Kannauj, Malwa, Chalukyas and the Rashtrakutas. They also faced the palas and Kalinga rulers. Kokalla I was the founder of this dynasty.

Joseph Needham is arguably the leading scholar of the century on science and technology in China. Needham's monumental work on China [ Note 1 ] painstakingly traces the evolution of science and technology in ancient and medieval China to its zenith, and eventual crumbling. Needham, as is any other scholar who studies China's remarkable growth in science and technology, is terribly puzzled at what went wrong. As Needham puts it, The extraordinary inventiveness, and insight into nature, of ancient and medieval China raises two fundamental questions. First, why should they have been so far in advance of other civilizations; and second, why aren't they now centuries ahead of the rest of the world? We think it was a matter of the very different social and economic systems between China and the West, as I will explain more fully in a moment. Modern science arose only in Europe in the seventeenth century when the best method of discovery was itself discovered; but the discoveries and inventions made then and thereafter depended in so many cases on centuries of previous Chinese progress in science, technology and medicine. [ Note 2 Needham was able to confound the older generation of sinologists who thought that a search for Chinese achievements in science and technology would be fruitless. He was able to find "glittering treasures" as
