Statistics: China's Economic Growth Exceeds World's Average
Statistics from the State Statistics Bureau show that China successfully tided over the unfavorable influence from a most complicated fickle internal and external economic environment during the 9th Five-year plan period. When with a rapid sustained economic growth achieved it had an annual GDP growth of 83 percent wrested, a rate much higher than other foreign countries, in the way China has its first two strategic targets for modernization smoothly realized.
  • For a fast economic growth the country has its overall national strength further enhanced and a joint development of its first, second and tertiary industries.

  • During the 9th Five-year Plan period, China's GDP growth averaged an annual 8.3 percent, surpassing the planned 8 percent target, quadrupling its 1980 per-capita GDP in 1995, three years ahead of time. Noteworthy is that the achievements had been wrested under an unfavorable situation caused by Asian financial crisis and severe natural disasters. In the past five years, world economic growth has been at an annual average of 3.8 percent, showing a 3.3 percent growth by developed countries and about 5 percent by the developing countries. All are at a much lower average level than that of China.

Business China to Tabulate Statistics on Non-Public Owned Economy
China is currently preparing to tabulate statistics on its non-public owned economy and will publish the official statistics. This would be the first time since the People's Republic of China was founded fifty years ago that China has calculated non-public owned economy's statistics. It was revealed during a conference of the heads of statistics bureaus from all over China that this year, the National Bureau of Statistics will do a sample survey of individual and privately invested projects, small-scale construction enterprises, mid-to-small-scale wholesale retail trading companies and the restaurant industry. Moreover, it will launch a pilot project to do a sample survey of rural villages. According to Li Qiang, head of the National Bureau of Statistics, a majority of the privately-owned enterprises will be incorporated into the government statistics within three years and all of them will be accounted for within five to six years. Li said that because of the large number of non-public owned enterprises, more than 1.2 million, a sample survey is the only way to count them. The central government and some local authorities have already set aside money for this project.

You were part of the original team that worked on this large and very informative new release. Can you explain to us a little what the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is and why it is involved in this analysis of China and its economy and what your role as one of the authors was in this important study? Answer: The OECD is a multilateral institution comprising the more advanced industrial economies that was created in as a forum for discussion and analysis of a wide range of economic issues of common concern. The organisation has expanded considerably in recent years and now includes 30 member countries drawn from all the regions of the world. Home Letters to Editor Domestic World ... Chinese Statistics Tell the Tale Qiu Xiaohua, deputy director general of the National Bureau of Statistics , summarized the national economic status for the first quarter of this year at a press conference sponsored by the State Council Information Office Wednesday. He also explained to the media how China’s statistical system works. Some foreign agencies and individuals have alleged that China’s statistics are unreliable. They defend their idea by saying that China’s energy consumption grew slowly and in certain years it even dropped, which is inconsistent with China’s constant economic growth. “This view is false and misleading,” Qiu said. He noted that slower energy consumption growth than simultaneous economic growth has extensively existed in the economic development histories of countries all over the world. According to currently available data, some economic powers such as the US, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Germany all have experienced occasionally similar situations to what is happening in China now. The reason behind this phenomenon is that changes in technologies and industrial structure can always alter the relationship between energy consumption and economic growth in a nation’s economic development process. During the past ten years in China, the energy consumption cost for GDP (gross domestic product) growth has dropped annually by 5 percent because of the development in technologies and change in industrial structure. China’s story proves that the economy can be boosted by saving energy.
