Newspapers/agencies
China's press is not free. Newspapers are constantly bombarded by circulars from the Communist leadership telling them what to cover, what to emphasise and what to leave out. But things have improved since the 1970s. Far more subjects, including non-political topics, are now covered, and newspapers are now allowed to print bad news as well as good news (within set limits). They are a good source for official government policy.
China Daily
: the first official English-language daily, also has weekly offshoot China Business Weekly covering business stories in more detail and another daily, the Shanghai Star , all in good English.
Chinanews
: Beijing-based Chinese-language news agency
China Youth Daily
: Beijing-based Chinese-language daily, toes the official line like other papers but lets its readers decide on staff performance and occasionally digs deeper into real lifeand finds more dirtthan other newspapers (according to an excellent BBC TV documentary shown in March 2000)
Green Times
: Beijing-based Chinese-language environmental newspaper covering green issues and also health and safety at workmore critical and informative than the general run of newspapers in China
Guangming Daily
: old-established Chinese-language daily newspaper for highly literate people, as it uses a much larger number of Chinese characters than the People's Daily

First Half, 2004 C hina's economy logged 9.6 percent growth in the second quarter of 2004, down from the first quarter's 9.8 percent and the 9.9 percent growth in last year's fourth quarter. Although the GDP figures were clouded by an upward revision of the 2003 base numbers, other statistics confirm that China's controlled economic stabilization is unquestionably under way. Money supply growth has fallen to its lowest point in two years, and both investment and industrial production are declining from early 2004 peaks. Table: PRC Main Economic Indicators

FDI=foreign direct investment.
Source: National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), China Monthly Statistics, China's Customs Statistics The PRC government first struck at credit with higher reserve requirements at the end of 2003. When fixed-asset investment failed to shrink quickly enough, Beijing increasingly turned to administrative fiat. After privately instructing banks in late April temporarily to stop lending, the central government raised the reserve rates a second time and selectively banned projects in overheated sectors. As a result, growth in fixed-asset investment and industrial output slowed markedly over the second quarter, although domestic consumption and exports continued to grow.

Newswatch Last Updated: Wednesday, 20 July 2005, 10:24 GMT 11:24 UK E-mail this to a friend Printable version China's economy keeps on motoring China's economy is undergoing a broad modernisation plan China's economy has grown more quickly than expected in the first six months of 2005 despite efforts by the government to put the brakes on.
The National Bureau of Statistics said the economy grew 9.5% from a year earlier in the first half, more than the 9.3% figure expected by analysts. Total gross domestic product (GDP) between January and June reached 6.7 trillion yuan (£466bn; $811bn). Exports and investment in construction and factory equipment drove growth. 'Slowing the economy' "Fairly good overall economic performance was recorded in the first half of this year," the statistical office said, adding that "China's high rate of bank savings, investment, robust market demand and abundant labour forces" helped to underpin growth. Looking at China's development targets, we see that we need to preserve fairly high economic growth

50. Business Statistics Center By Irwin/McGraw-Hill Interview With Lester C. Thurow
business statistics Center by Irwin/McGrawHill. If you’re measuring economics, then obviously china is doing a lot better than the Soviet Union.
http://www.mhhe.com/business/opsci/bstat/thurow.mhtml
Interview with Lester C. Thurow Lester C. Thurow is professor of management and economics at MIT and was recently Dean of the MIT Sloan School of Management. A graduate of Williams College, Thurow received his M.A. on a Rhodes scholarship from Ballioi College (Oxford) and his PhD in economics from Harvard University. He taught at Harvard in 1964-65 following a term as staff member on President Johnson’s Council of Economic Advisers. In addition to his academic appointment Thurow is vice president of the American Economics Association, author of the notable The Zero-Sum Society, and his latest book is Head to Head: The Coming Economic Battle Among Japan, Europe, and America. Aczel : Let’s start with something most timely that’s happening right now. In Chapter 6 of Head to Head you mention the possibilities in the Middle East with Israel possibly supplying technological know-how to the Arab states with oil and other products. With what’s happening just right now, how do you see… Thurow Aczel: Let’s move to other places. How do you see what’s happening with NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement)-how do you see that developing? Do you see us becoming – this is a strange way to put it – but do you see North America becoming a cohesive common market in the sense the Europe is already? Thurow: Well, I think it’s going to be very hard to integrate Mexico and the United States because we’ve never tried to do it between countries that have such different income levels. If you look at the income difference on a per capita basis, say between Germany and Greece, which is the biggest difference in Europe, that’s a much smaller income gap than the gap between Mexico and the United States, and Greece is of course, a relatively small country compared to the rest of Europe. Mexico has 90 million people. It’s a very big country even in comparison with the United States and so I think the question about how you make this kind of integration move work smoothly…There are going to be some losers on both sides, but so that it’s mostly winners on both sides, it’s going to take a lot of effort, a lot of management effort from government and a lot of people.

One of the best starting point for statistical sources by country, topic or subject. This service includes sources offering free and easily accessible social, economic and general data from official or similar "quotable" sources, especially those that provide both current data and time series. In the country lists, these are mainly Web pages provided by statistical offices, central banks and government departments and agencies, whereas the topics list is comprised of links to the statistics pages of international organizations and associations and a few commercial sites. NationMaster www.nationmaster.com
This site is produced by Rapid Intelligence Pty Ltd, an online publishing company based in Sydney, Australia. It repackages information from many different sources including the CIA World Factbook, World Bank, WHO, FAO (there is a very long list of sources on the web site). You can compare data in a variety of ways. For example you can select your own specific countries, a region, or an economic group such as OPEC and then a category and statistic for that category. The sources used for each comparison are listed and you can quickly change from totals to per capita figures, which are often more meaningful.

Jul 22, 2005 Half-year statistics show strong Chinese growth
BEIJING - China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released the statistics report for the first half of 2005 on July 20. The following were the main economic figures for the first half.
China's GDP (gross domestic product) grew by 9.5% to 6.7422 trillion yuan (US$8,123 billion) in the first half of this year, and the growth rate was 0.2 percentage points lower than a year earlier.
In the first half of this year, regions and departments at all levels aimed to consolidate the achievements brought by macroeconomic cooling measures, said Zheng Jingping, spokesman for the NBS, at a press conference in Beijing on July 20. "As a result, fairly good overall economic performance was recorded in the first half of this year."
Breaking the growth figures down by industry, primary industry reported a value added of 670.7 billion yuan, up 5%; secondary industry, 3,963.5 billion yuan, up 11.2%; and the tertiary industries, 2,108.0 billion yuan, up 7.8%, according to the NBS.

Aug 11, 2005 Business jet market soars in China
BEIJING - China's growing billionaires' club is attracting the attention of private jet makers as tycoons reach for the sky with the ultimate status symbol and big boys' toy.
Whether for business or pleasure, manufacturers reckon private aviation in China is set to take off in a big way. Diamond Aircraft Industries, an Austria-based aircraft manufacturer, is one of the foreign jet makers eyeing the lucrative market. Diamond established a joint venture with the Binzhou Dagao General Aviation Co Ltd in East China's Shandong province in June. The first 4-seat DA40 light plane is expected to leave the assembly line in October, with a list price of around US$200,000, sources from the joint venture said. Though the DA40 is not itself a jet, the company considers China a promising market for private jets in the near future.
