    Chile Geography
The northern Chilean desert contains great mineral wealth, primarily copper and nitrates. The relatively small central area dominates the country in terms of population and agricultural resources. This area also is the historical center from which Chile expanded until the late 19th century, when it incorporated its northern and southern regions. Southern Chile is rich in forests and grazing lands and features a string of volcanoes and lakes. The southern coast is a labyrinth of fjords, inlets, canals, twisting peninsulas, and islands. The Andes Mountains are located on the eastern border. source: http://www.state.gov

Introduces the geography, history and culture of the world's longest country, which stretches more than 2,700 miles along the southwestern coast of South America.

    CHILE
    Introduction
    C
hile is a country of startling contrasts and extreme beauty, with attractions ranging from the towering volcanic peaks of the Andes to the ancient forests of the Lake District. There are a multitude of very good parks here, and plenty of opportunities for fine adventure travel. Chile is justly famous as the location of Torres del Paine, considered by many to be the finest nature travel destinations in all of South America.
    Location, Geography Climate
For anyone who has ever been fascinated by geography, the long, impossibly thin line of Chile has always produced a tiny moment of astonishment. Chile stretches over 4,300 km (2,700 mi) along the southwestern coast of South America, a distance roughly the same as that from San Francisco to New York, or Edinburgh to Baghdad. At the same time, its width never exceeds 240 km (150 mi), making the country more than eighteen times longer than its widest point.
In the center of the country, however, is a long and expansive river valley, a five hundred mile corridor occupied in the north by vineyards and great farms and in the south by primeval forests and enchanting lakes. Santiago, the capital, anchors the northern and more prosperous section of the central valley. The lush Lake District to the south, however, is the homeland of Chile's indigenous peoples, the Araucanians.

    GEOGRAPHY
Chile Table of Contents In a classic book on the natural setting and people of Chile, Benjamín Subercaseaux Zañartu, a Chilean writer, describes the country's geography as loca (crazy). The book's English translator renders this term as "extravagant." Whether crazy or extravagant, there is little question that Chile's territorial shape is certainly among the world's most unusual. From north to south, Chile extends 4,270 kilometers, and yet it only averages 177 kilometers east to west. On a map, Chile looks like a long ribbon reaching from the middle of South America's west coast straight down to the southern tip of the continent, where it curves slightly eastward. Cape Horn, the southernmost point in the Americas, where the Pacific and Atlantic oceans turbulently meet, is Chilean territory. Chile's northern neighbors are Peru and Bolivia, and its border with Argentina to the east, at 5,150 kilometers, is one of the world's longest. Chile's shape was determined by the fact that it began as a Spanish settlement on the western side of the mighty cordillera of the Andes, in the central part of the country. This range, which includes the two tallest peaks in the AmericasAconcagua (6,959 meters) and Nevado Ojos del Salado (6,880 meters)is a formidable barrier, whose passes to the Argentine side are covered by a heavy blanket of snow during the winter months. As a result, Chile could expand beyond its original colonial territory only to the south and north. The colony grew southward by occupying lands populated by indigenous groups, and it grew northward by occupying sections of both Peru and Bolivia that were eventually awarded to Chile in the aftermath of the War of the Pacific (1879-83).

    Chile - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman If you look at a map, you'll notice something strange about Chile. Its shape isn't like any other country in the world. Chile is long and skinny. Located on the western coast of South America, it's 4,300 km long from north to south, but it is only 200 km wide! Chile is also home to an island named after a holiday.
Chile is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the east by Argentina and Bolivia, and to the north by Peru. Because it is so long, there are many different kinds of land in Chile. In the north are high mountains where it almost never rains. In the south is Patagonia, an area in Chile and Argentina that is a beautiful land of huge mountains and big rivers. To the west are beaches.
Imagine being on a beach in Chile. There's a boat nearby. You decide to get in the boat and see what's out at sea. You travel 3,700 km to the west. Know what you'd find there? A very strange island, called Easter Island.

    Chile - History
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Chile's geography played an important part in its early history. For thousands of years, different tribes of people lived in the land of Chile. Chile's geography holds coastal areas, wide plains, and high mountain ranges. And each area had its own population. The Araucarian lived in the south, where they fished. Aymara lived in the north, where they herded animals. Diaguita lived in the mountains in interior Chile.
Chile's tribes lived alone until Europeans arrived in the 16th century. The first European to arrive in Chile was a man from Spain named Ferdinand Magellan. He arrived in Chile in 1520. The next Spaniard to reach Chile was Pedro de Valdivia in 1540. Chile's capital city, Santiago was founded in 1541 and Valdivia was named governor of Chile.
Valdivia wanted to control Chile and the natives who already lived there. He expanded Spain's territory in Chile, but met resistance from the native Chilean tribes. When he sent Spanish forces into Chile's south, Araucarians fought back.
