Chile (04/05) About 10,000 years ago, migrating Indians settled in fertile valleys and along the coast of what is now Chile. The Incas briefly extended their empire into what is now northern Chile, but the area's barrenness prevented extensive settlement. The first Europeans to arrive in Chile were Diego de Almagro and his band of Spanish conquistadors, who came from Peru seeking gold in 1535. The Spanish encountered hundreds of thousands of Indians from various cultures in the area that modern Chile now occupies. These cultures supported themselves principally through slash-and-burn agriculture and hunting. The conquest of Chile began in earnest in 1540 and was carried out by Pedro de Valdivia, one of Francisco Pizarro's lieutenants, who founded the city of Santiago on February 12, 1541. Although the Spanish did not find the extensive gold and silver they sought, they recognized the agricultural potential of Chile's central valley, and Chile became part of the Viceroyalty of Peru. ... Research by history's Patrick Barr-Melej on the counterculture movement in Chile finds popular acceptance.
At least once a year, Patrick Barr-Melej, assistant professor of history, travels to Chile to conduct his research.
Those efforts have produced one book, Reforming Chile: Culture Politics, Nationalism, and the Rise of the Middle Class (University of North Carolina Press), which provides the first comprehensive analysis of Chile's middle-class reform movement and its profound impact on that country's cultural and political landscapes from the 1880s to the 1940s.
His travels will soon deliver a second book to be published by the University of North Carolina Press, tentatively called Psychedelic Chil e, on the counterculture movement in Chile in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

    http://www.sanmarcoschurch.cl/fr_culture.html
n many ways the Chilean culture is more European in style than Latin American, due to the preponderance of European immigrants in Chile. Despite the apparent diversity of the population, however, Chileans have remained relatively homogenous. Immigrants coming to this land have been assimilated into the culture without prejudice and have accepted the predominance of the Spanish language, and the strong influence of Roman Catholicism. The geographical isolation of the country seems to have further insulated the people from global ethnic sparring. The influence of the Roman Catholic Church is felt; both divorce and abortion are illegal. Although there are over one million Native American Indians in Chile, they live in the far reaches of the north and south. Their culture and customs are officially protected by the Indigenous Peoples Law. There is general respect for the human rights of all Chilean citizens. Perceptions of human rights abuses generally date back to the military rule of the 1970s. Chile has a well-trained work force with high productivity. Education is emphasized as a means to a better life, and the great majority of young people receive secondary education, many in technical and professional specialities. Chile has a large, well-educated middle class.

Country Info Chile Introduction Chile General Data Chile Maps Chile Culture ... Chile Time and Date Chile And Easter Island Culture Back to Top The Development of Chilean society since the nation broke away from Spain early in the nineteenth century reflects in many ways a remarkable incongruity. On the one hand, the nation's political institutions and many of its social institutions developed much like their counterparts in the United States and Western Europe. On the other hand, the economy had a history of insufficient and erratic growth that left Chile among the less developed nations of the world. Given the first of these characteristics, Chilean society, culture, and politics have struck generations of observers from more developed nations as having what can be described, for want of a better expression, as a familiar "modernity." Yet this impression always seemed at odds with the deficiency of resources at all levels, the highly visible and considerable urban and rural poverty, and the considerable social inequalities. Chile's location on the far southern shores of the Americas' Pacific coast made international contacts difficult until the great advance in global air travel and communications of the post-World War II time. This relative isolation of a people whose main cultural roots lay in the Iberian-Catholic variant of Western civilization likely had the paradoxical effect of making Chileans more receptive to outside determines than would otherwise have been the case. The small numbers of foreign travelers reaching the nation in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries usually found a warm welcome from people eager to hear of the latest trends in leading nations.

This is one of Chile's foremost tourist areas, with some of the most frequented national parks, renowned lake resorts, volcanoes, ski resorts and Mapuche settlements where traditions are still kept alive. T emuco is the perfect starting point for an exploration of Chile's stunningly beautiful Lake District, a region of rolling hillsides, lush green forests, and snow-capped volcanic peaks. Temuco is also the cultural centre of the Mapuche Indians, the original inhabitants of the area. Almost alone among South American peoples, the Mapuche successfully resisted European incursions, maintaining independent control of their territory for over 300 years in the face of considerable force. Today, the Lake District has almost 3,000 Mapuche reservations, and Temuco is the principal market town. Traditional Mapuche crafts are sold at Temuco's Mercado Municipal and Feria Libre .
