Chile Culture
The chilean people have their own culture that interested me especially as a foreigner. Their culture consists of everything from their own slang to old fashion rodeos . The daily life of a Chilean had a lot in common with mine but also had a lot of stuff that I had never experienced before visiting Chile. My favorite time of the year was September when Chileans celebrate their independence . It is a time of great national pride and a wonderful opportunity to enjoy Chile's great food dishes This section contains information on things that I found to be "Chilean" or that interested me during my stay.

Chile's Independence Day
(Fiestas Patrias)
The fiestas patrias (literally "patriotic parties") are a time for all Chileans to gather together and celebrate their country, culture, and independence. Celebrations of all things Chilean center on their independence day.
Independence Day - September 18th
Chileans celebrate their independence on the 18th of September. They proclaimed their independence from Spain on that date in 1810. Although they would have to fight for eight more years to earn their total freedom, Chile celebrates the 18th of 1810 with great fanfare. The 18th, or "dieciocho," is celebrated during a week full of fiestas patrias. This includes parades, dances, drinking, eating traditional Chilean food, and music. Parades include huasos, the traditional Chilean cowboys, music, and displays of national pride.

CULTURE Two lively and contrasting cultural strains predominate in Chile: the cosmopolitan culture of the affluent urban population, and the popular culture of the peasants, which is predominantly Spanish but contains traces of Araucanian heritage. The latter influences are strongest in Chilean music and dance. Chile has a flourishing literary tradition and has produced two Nobel Prize winners in literature, Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda, both poets. Language and a common history have promoted cultural homogeneity in the country. Even the Araucanians and certain Aymara minorities in the north share the values of the Chilean identity, while continuing to cherish their own cultural heritage. Chileans have always displayed a high degree of tolerance toward the customs and traditions of minority groups, as well as toward Christian and non-Christian religious practices. The flavour of local custom and tradition in Chile is readily observable in the numerous colourful religious festivals that take place at various localities throughout the country. Hundreds of thousands of spectators are drawn to these processions.

Description: The School for International Training's Study Abroad programs offer field-based study in over 57 countries. Students earn 16 semester credits on a 15-week experience designed to encourage a global awareness that enables people to live and act in an interdependent world. Groups of seven to 25 students are lead by one or two academic directors. Chile's "economic miracle" has generated international interest, as has its return, after 18 years of military dictatorship, to civilian rule. Recent efforts to prosecute former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet spurred worldwide debates on issues of human rights and social justice. In this program, based in the engaging seaport city of Valparayso and neighboring Viya del Mar, you examine Chile's political history in a contemporary cultural context. Excursions to nearby Santiago, intensive field study, and a homestay with indigenous families in either Arica, the seaside base of the Aymara and Andean cultures, or Temuko, homeland of the Mapuche, not only deepen your appreciation of the attitudes, behaviors, practices, and values encompassed within Chile's diverse panorama ' they also help you to better understand Chile's efforts to reconcile its past while moving forward politically, socially, and economically.
