Airbags May Increase Risk of Injury in Children Up to Age 14
by Krisha McCoy, MS Automobile accidents are the leading cause of death among children in the United States, killing over 90,000 children under age 20 in the 1990s. Many of these deaths could have been prevented if the children were properly placed in car seats, wearing seatbelts and/or positioned in age-appropriate locations in the car. But, while airbags significantly reduce the risk of crash-related death and injury in adults, they may be more harmful than beneficial for some children. Since 1999, the federal government has required automobile makers to install driver and passenger front-impact airbags in all cars, light trucks, and vans. Although there is a risk of serious injury and death as a result of airbag deployment, it is clear that the benefits of airbags outweigh the risks for adults. From 1990 to 2003, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated that while 230 deaths were caused by airbag inflation, 14,000 lives were saved by airbags. But these safety benefits dont necessarily apply to children. In 2001, the NHTSA demonstrated that passenger-side airbags may cause serious injuries and deaths to children seated in the right front seat. As a result, since 1997, the NHTSA has required the warning label, Children 12 and under can be killed by an air bag, in all passenger vehicles with airbags. But researchers are not sure that age 12 is the appropriate cutoff age, and some speculate that a height and/or weight cutoff may be more appropriate.

  • Car Seats 2 Characteristics of Chronically Ill Children Childhood Friendships Child Immunizations ... More Research Briefs Car Seats 2 Parents and caregivers are doing a better job of installing car seats and restraining their children in automobiles. However, there is still an overwhelming number of child passengers that continue to be incorrectly restrained in vehicles. One of the most shocking findings is the number of children between the ages of three and eight who are being moved to the adult seat belt instead of being restrained in car seats or belt positioning booster seats. A great deal of child related injury is due to this lack of care seat safety.
The use of airbags in vehicles also plays a part in the number of injuries incurred by childhood passengers. Air bags are designed for frontal impact crashes and are used to deter head and chest injuries. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, over 107 million of the over 207 million cars on the U.S. roads have driver airbags. More than 81 million have passenger side airbags as well. Airbags saved an estimated 2000 lives in 1999 alone. While airbags are designed to save lives, there are many risks involved in the use of airbags, particularly to child passengers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported 97 cases were an airbag deployed resulting in fatal head and neck injury to a child. Eighteen of these deaths were to infants in rear facing child safety seats. The other injuries were either unbuckled, out of position, or only wearing the lap portion of the safety belt.

Safety and Security The 2000 Continental comes standard with an emergency trunk release system, designed to allow a child or adult trapped in the trunk to open it from the inside. The glow-in-the-dark trunk release handle will be factory installed, standard equipment on all Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. The child seat anchor system, which meets new U.S. government safety requirements, is composed of two permanent childseat anchors in the back seat. The anchors provide a more secure mooring for the childseat when buckling in infants and small children. The 2000 Continental also features Belt Minder Standard on the 2000 Continental are front and side impact airbags for the driver and front passenger. The side impact airbag system is designed to provide occupants with added head and chest protection during side-impact crashes. Other safety and security features and options include anti-lock brakes, all-speed traction control, RESCU (Remote Emergency Cellular Unit), which automatically calls for help when an air bag deploys, the SecuriTires system, and dual visors for increased visibility.

Top 10 Safety Features for a Family Vehicle If you're in the market for a family hauler, you'll no doubt want to know which safety features will most benefit you and your brood. Here are 10 we think you should consider:
  • High crash test scores: Obviously, this isn't a safety feature per se, but crash test scores give crucial insight into the kind of protection offered by a vehicle. Specifically, look for a four- or five-star crash test rating (for both front- and side-impact tests) from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and a "Good" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for 40-mph frontal offset and side-impact tests. Of particular interest to family buyers, the side-impact test conducted by the IIHS is designed to measure the level of occupant protection when a vehicle is struck by an SUV or pickup truck. Crash test data may be researched on Edmunds.com
