Unfortunately, national studies show that as many as 90 percent of car seats are not installed or used correctly. Because of the variety of cars and car seat designs, car seats can be complicated to install and use. To make sure your child's car seat is safe, make an appointment with a child passenger safety technician in your area. You can find a technician or inspection station online on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) Web site (www.nhtsa.dot.gov) or by calling your local police department. Guidelines for car seat safety: Children ages 12 and younger should ride properly restrained in the back seat, which is the safest place for children.

Did you know that Massachusetts law requires all children to ride in child safety seats until they are 5 years old and they weigh 40 pounds? Did you know that Massachusetts law requires infant seats to be rear facing until the child is 1 year old and 20 pounds? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Governor's Highway Safety Bureau additionally recommend booster seats for children five years of age or older and weighing 40 - 60 pounds. National studies reflect an approximately 80% incorrect use rate. Local checkups report misuse rates over 90%. Due to this alarming rate, The Governor's Highway Safety Bureau sponsors Child Passenger Safety Technician courses. Many local Police and Fire Departments send representatives to this course to be trained as technicians. The Acton Police Department enrolled Det. Kevin Heffernan and Det. Scott Howe. Det. Heffernan and Det. Howe are now certified by NHTSA as Child passenger Safety Technicians. If anyone would like to have Ptl. Heffernan and Det. Howe check their seats please call The Acton Police Department at 264-9638 to set up an appointment. Please understand, when making the appointment that this checkup could take between 15 and 60 minutes to perform.

    Child Passenger Safety
Phil Gulak National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
Thursday, February 24, 2005; 11:00 AM Phil Gulak oversees child passenger safety programs for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and has worked for NHTSA for 20 years. One of NHTSA's responsibilities is to increase the use of child safety seats. Working closely with other safety organizations, the agency has accomplished much. A recent study showed 99 percent restraint use for infants and 94 percent for toddlers. There are now child passenger safety seat laws in all U.S. states, plus D.C. and Puerto Rico. However, there are still challenges and too many safety seats are still misused. Too many kids are still sitting in the front seat (children 12 and under are safest when properly buckled in the back seat). And many older children are progressing prematurely to safety belts when they should be in booster seats. Phil Gulak

Child safety seats a priority for fire captain after grandson's death Chandler fire captain lost grandson in wreck, works to ensure kids are properly secured Lindsey Collom
    The Arizona Republic
Jul. 11, 2005 03:24 PM Chandler fire Capt. Dan McFarland didn't give much thought to car seat safety, not until his grandson died in an auto accident.
He tells the story like this: His stepdaughter was speeding through Gonzalez Pass on U.S. 60 near Miami when she lost control of her vehicle. It skidded off a guardrail, smashed into several other cars and collided head-on with another.
His grandson, secured in a child seat in the back, was killed instantly. advertisement OAS_AD('BoxAd')
"I was angry and upset," McFarland said.
Although it turned out his grandson's safety seat was properly installed, investigating that accident prompted McFarland to make child safety seats, and their proper installation in other people's cars, a priority in his work. About 90 percent of fatalities and 78 percent of injuries could be avoided if children were secured in approved seat restraints, according to the Academy of Pediatrics.
