    Report from the Editor:
As our president indicated in her message, the upcoming year marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of OCWW. Her comment prompted me to look at back issues of the newsletter to read about events in the last ten years. What I noticed immediately were the names of many of you who are active in the organization. Serving in various volunteer positions, members like Marjorie Franco and Marge Herguth have contributed much to the success of the group. In preparation for our important milestone year, it would be interesting to hear from you about ways OCWW has influenced your writing. Whether you are a recent member or one who has been with the group over many years, please share your thoughts with us.

BellaOnline's Childrens Book Writing Editor Find Your Passion and Make a Difference In the beginning (and there always is a beginning) you are a new writer. Everyone who writes started out never having been published. And that's truly comforting considering being the new kid on the block is not the most comfortable place to be for vast majority of us.
Fortunately, there are specialty genres in the children's writing industry which have a growing need for quality material. These specialty markets generally do not have the amount of submissions and are therefore less competitive - meaning you may be up against fewer manuscripts. This is absolutely not to say that you don't have to write as well for these markets. A bad manuscript is a bad manuscript no matter what the vantage point. In general many of these specialized makets have an overall higher submission to acceptance ratio (for quality manuscripts) so your chances of getting published are a bit higher. Think of it as if you were applying to a college. Selecting one of the more renowned colleges will put you up against a lot of competition. Your chances of getting in are lower than if you decided to go to one of the lesser known schools.
