Faith Schools, Sectarian education and social segregation: Disadvantages of divisive religious behavior
By Vexen Crabtree 2003 Jun 03 This page presents a lengthy criticism of faith-based schools, especially Christian and Islam fundamentalist schools, which have recently become more common in the UK by benefit of increased funding from Christian evangelical organisations. Contents:
  • Sectarian Schooling
  • Sectarian schools breed cultural conflict
  • Indoctrination versus Parental discretion
  • Do faith schools provide better education? ...
  • Segregation is a slippery slope
    1. Sectarian Schooling
A "sectarian" school is one that is apart from the normal schools ran by the government, or private schools that are part of the respected and official ISC (Independent Schools Council). In particular, sectarian schools are places where children are educated from a particular viewpoint or ideology, and ethnic schools that separate people and cause different groups to mature within completely separate (sectarian) systems. The more religious schools there are, the less the chance of eliminating Sectarianism - and, the more minority religion schools there are, the greater the danger of splintering our education system along racial as well as sectarian lines.

    The "religion" of Atlantis?
Atlantis - Religion for Religion's sake?
Chapter Five As I said earlier, part of our training at the monastery was to learn about the various cultures and religions of the world, so many of my earliest courses as a novice monk were about religions. At the time, as typical with my young ego, I thought I already knew all there was to know about the subject, but there was really far more to it than I thought. The following chapter is a recollection of a course given by elder Noah, regarding the Atlantean, and later, teachings about religion. "There are a variety of reasons that can be behind the founding of a religion - some are good, and many are bad. Thus both good and bad religions have been created. There are religions that started as a means for worship. Some to help people improve themselves spiritually or otherwise. Others were specifically created just to control and have power over the people. But even many religions that started with good intentions, degenerated over time into self-serving power structures whose main function was to control people, and make money." "How do they control people, other than by peer pressure and trying to convince someone about something with a sermon?"

This Comment Appeared at: As is quite usual in stories told in WorldNetDaily.com the headline and subtitle of the article grossly misrepresent the essence of the situation, even as becomes obvious in their own telling of the story at Homeschoolers barred from religious materials: Government issues order after luring parents into district program The title "Homeschoolers Barred from Religious Materials" evokes the spectre of jack booted thugs invading our childrens' bedrooms and physically preventing their outstreatched hands from reaching the much-loved bible stories that they had carefully tucked just under the edges of their pillows. In the body of the article it comes out that what is at issue is a question of finance. The parents of the story had attempted to saddle taxpayers with the cost of the catechism materials that they wished to use for the religious indoctrination of their children.

    Response to a Christian
Sent: Tuesday, November 12, 2002 9:25 AM Subject: your site Terry Dear Terrry, I get a lot of e-mails from people like you that either didn't check out the rest of my website or just one page. As you weren't specific as to what page you refer to I'll have to guess. (I've got about 500 covering most topics from multiple views.) Yes I have and have supported it. What I object to is public officials acting in behalf of any particular belief. I don't know just what country you live in but in VA and TN a child can pray at any time, church groups are welcome to use school facilities at any time before or after school, and even Christian celebrations like "Meet you at the flagpole." There are also has federal guidelines for religion in schools. What is it with you people? Can you not believe in God or pray without making a spectacle of yourselves or demanding others join in? In my community we have militant Baptists that publicly attack Mormons, Catholics, Jehovah's Witnesses, etc. and have publicly stated their intention to use school prayer, etc. to "talk to them" about their version of God. I call this targeting and no matter what you say, they mean what they say. I was a victim of this crap when I was in school. The fact is those who attend church are only 20-40% of the population depending on what stats we go by. If people want church then they can go on Sunday, after school, or before school if they want to. One local school offered to directly set up before-school programs for local churches but they refused claiming, "lack of interest on the part of students." A fundamentalist can tell the truth at times.

Religious bodies should engage more actively in empowering society to fight the negative effects of globalization on children. This view was expressed by progressive religious thinkers at a seminar organized by the World Council of Churches (WCC), the National Council of Churches in India, and the Christian Conference of Asia at the World Social Forum which ended today in Mumbai, India.
At the well-attended 19 January seminar on "Building an alternative world: affirming the dignity of children", speakers from various faiths discussed how religious bodies might get involved in protecting the rights of children.
WCC Asia secretary Mathews George Chunakara, who moderated the seminar, said that globalization and economic market reforms in developing countries are instrumental in increasing the number of children forced onto the streets and into work at an early age as additional breadwinners for their families.
The number of street children grows day by day as globalization intensifies in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Southern Europe, he said. According to Chunakara, these children are the mute testimony of economic recession, unemployment, poverty, break-down of traditional patterns of social and economic life, family disruption and lack of willingness of governments to protect the well-being of their peoples.

The overall spirit of the book is holistic, and it examines virtually all phases of childhood religious education. What this Book Gives You This book gives you many practical procedures which are eminently workable because it grounds these procedures in solid research, fruitful theory, and tested practice.
