Ages 4-7. Jessica the frog discovers an egg, which her frog friend Marilyn identifies as a ~chicken egg. A baby alligator hatches out, but the frogs continue to call it a chicken. When Jessica helps the "little chicken" find his mother, she's amused when the mother calls him "my sweet little alligator." It's not much of a story, but preschoolers who are old enough to know their alligators from their chickens will enjoy being in on the joke. Lionni's collages of cut papers, shaded with crayons or oil pastels, make distinctive double-page spreads that show up well at a distance, and the text is clearly written. A mildly appealing animal tale for Lionni fans. ~Carolyn Phelan

I. Introduce Jan Brett
  • The first is the fine detail she uses to depict animals and objects in her stories. The second is the use of borders. In particular a sub-plot of the story is often told in the borders surrounding the main content and the art in the borders also often predicts what will occur next in the story.

  • Introduce Jan Brett to students through her online video chat (video streaming) from the following website. http://www.janbrett.com/video/jan_brett_video_chat.htm
Use the following questions to focus on the information from the video.
    • Who is Jan Brett? What did you learn about her when she was in kindergarten? Was there anything special about her books? Was there anything special that you learned about her illustrations?

A picture of Jan Brett a that has been printed from the following web page http://www.janbrett.com/biography.html will be posted on the bulletin board above a table where books by the author are displayed. (This page also contains biographical information that can be shared with the students.)

Children's Literature - Syllabus Course Description Children's Literature is a one-semester (18-week) course with 15 lessons and 2 review lessons that prepare students for teaching or working with young children. The course covers a variety of different types of literature, genre, and age groups. Students utilize online materials as much as possible. Each lesson takes approximately 6-7 hours to complete and includes an assessment. Students are also encouraged to participate in group research projects and activities throughout the course, so that they may collaborate with other students and instructors. Middle-of-course and end-of-course surveys are conducted online so that students may make suggestions and critique the progress of the course, curriculum content, technology, and teaching methodologies. These suggestions are reviewed and implemented by AMDG staff for continual improvement of course content and delivery. AMDG course content is built by a variety of methods. Gagne's Events are clearly delineated throughout the course. In addition, all 6 levels of Bloom's Taxonomy and 3 different learning styles are integrated into each lesson, so that students are encouraged to learn on all levels. Bloom's words are bolded throughout the course. Instructors are encouraged to adapt, add, and include assignments which utilize recommended readings and activities for remediation or advancement of students in course content. Courses are handicapped accessible and adhere to ISTE

Using Children's Literature to Promote Early Literacy and Reading Readiness
I n the article on Approaching Reading Readiness , we discussed five tips for helping your child learn to read. In summary, they were: 1) Read to your child, calling attention to details in the story for comprehension and phoneme awareness; 2) Call attention to letters and the sounds they stand for; 3) Play word games with your child; 4) Help your child learn to take words apart and put them back together; and 5) Introduce new words to your child. All of these steps will promote young children's language and literacy development, and help them to be "ready to read" by the time they enter the kindergarten and early elementary grades. On these pages, as an accompaniment to its early literacy resources American Library Association . The third received the Spur Award - Story Teller Category from the Western Writers of America
