There are three pieces of general advice I always give - Be optimistic - lots of unknown writers get published every day, so why not you? Work hard 3/ Develop a thick skin and never take no for an answer
First Things First - Writing the Book
The most important thing of all - make time to write
Some General, Practical Tips for Writing
You may find this works for you.
The first thing you need is your genre
The very, very first thing, before you decide on your characters and plot, is to decide what sort of book you want to write - what genre
Plotting Ideas for plots come from everywhere - from magazines and newspapers; in shops and on buses; from people chatting; from travelling; from trying to imagine what would have happened if you made a different choice in your life somewhere along the line; from books; from plays and films; from dreams and daydreams - ideas are all around you - you just have to soak then up.
But I can make some suggestions - The Opening Open with a strong and attention grabbing sentence if you can. Another example - It is a truth universally known that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife - Pride and Prejudice begun in 1796.

Looking at work that spans the length of his career, this article examines Hughes's individual collections for children, both in their own terms as poetry and in terms of their intended audience. I suggest that Ted Hughes's poetry for children was an attempt, with varying degrees of success, to create a body of work that remained true to his gift of 'caging' the minute within real and imaginary worlds, and that he expended considerable energy in staying faithful, not only to the world as he saw it, but also to the way his work appeared in, and took its place within, that world. At the century's end, poetry and verse for children is a burgeoning field, the roster of children's poets long and growing. Some critics find little merit in the genre, preferring that children be introduced instead to the works of acknowledged 'great' poets. This essay explores, among related ideas, such questions as these: In today's abundance of children's verse, is there genuine poetry? What do critics and poets consider to be genuine poetry? Where do the children themselves stand on the subject of poetry? Interview with Jon Scieszka
interviewed by Ryan Boudinot
Jon Scieszka is the author of the most subversive and intelligent children's books around. He has teamed up with a number of illustrators, most notably Lane Smith, who has lent a funky, dadaist aesthetic to Scieszka's stories of bacteria, processed meat products, time-traveling kids and, of course, stinky cheese. Scieszka is the author of, among other things, The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Tales , the Time Warp Trio books, and the new Squids Will Be Squids . We conversed via email. Ryan Boudinot: I spoke to my sister (age 14) last night and she said her copy of The Stinky Cheese Man physically stinks. What'd you guys do, use bleu cheese dressing in the ink?

Masters of Education
The following question was posed as part of a mid-term test to a group of Master of Education students studying English Children's Literature at a Thai university. ‘Harry Potter’ is said to be the most popular and the most-in-demand among young readers these days. What do you think makes the book so successful? Why does the book appeal to children? Comment on the elements of fiction; plot, setting, characters, characterization, theme, and style. After the test the marks for the question is struck from the results following a complaint by students that it was unfair as a number of them had never read or even heard of Harry Potter. It struck me as amusing that the average 10 year old knows more than these would be masters. The unbelievable part is that rather than being laughed out of the course diector's office, it was deemed that hiding under a rock on Mars for the last 5 years should not disqualify one from bearing the title Master of Education, and the complaint upheld and the question deemed unfair and the fault of the lecturer for assuming too much cultural knowlege was known by the students.
