84. Author Profile Of Lee Weatherly
Children s author, Lee Weatherly, talks about herself and her writing. I ve always had a deep love for children s fiction once you re hooked on it,
http://www.wordpool.co.uk/ap/weatherly.htm
Lee Weatherly How many books have you had published?
I have one book that's actually on the shelves, and two others that have been sold: Child X , published June 2002 (David Fickling Books, Random House)
Alex Deftblade - first of a fantasy trilogy called The Stone Spiral - to be published November 2003 (David Fickling Books, Random House)
Work in progress: Gone , to be published 2004 by David Fickling Books, Random House After Gone , I'll start work on the sequel to Alex. I plan to stagger my fantasy work with my 'real-life' fiction. Did you write for fun when you were at school?
Always! Writing has been an important part of my life for almost literally as long as I can remember. I grew up surrounded by books, and wanted to create my own from an early age. One of my first memories, in fact, is of being four or five and writing and drawing my own picture book, about a fox and a horse. As I recall, the fox saved the horse from being sent off to the glue factory at the end, so you can see that even then, my stories were delightfully upbeat. Then as a teenager, I'd write extremely tongue in cheek (a polite way of saying it) stories about all of our acquaintances and teachers, and pass out copies to all of my friends, who thought they were hysterically funny. Looking back, I suppose I'm lucky not to have been found out and expelled!

Thanks, too, to Julia (aka Nai'a, eclipse@a.crl.com) for her recommendations and commentaries and to Scott Taylor for his commentaries. My adult fiction bibliography contains some young-adult fiction titles that are not duplicated in the present bibliography (although several appear in both places). Cetacean video titles for children from the National Geographic Society, Walt Disney, and other sources appear in the Cetacean Videography , and cetacean songs and taped stories for children (most of which are marked "For children") appear in the Cetacean Audiography The "Other Resources," section of this bibliography contains information about non-book items (such as games and exhibits) and resources for educators. Please note, however, that there are also some book resources for educators in the main section of the bibliography that are not repeated in the "Other Resources" section. Suggestions for additions, and commentary on any title by both adults and children, are most welcome (please send to Trisha Lamb Feuerstein, dolphintlf@aol.com).

GETTING STARTED AUTHOR'S BOOKSHELF WRITERS WANTED ... Contact Us Rita Milios, MSW ( rita "at" milios.net ) is a freelance writer and editor of over two dozen books and numerous magazine articles for children in grades K-8, for publishers including MacMillan, Prentice Hall, Harcourt Educational, Rosen and others. A former writing instructor for Long Ridge Writer's Group (a division of The Institute of Children's Literature), Rita has critiqued both fiction and nonfiction manuscripts, and yes, a few were "cute bunny" stories.
Five Reasons to Write Nonfiction for Children
by Rita Milios
Most children's writers, it seems, are writing fiction. There's something about cute bunny stories, rhyming text and talking animals that many children's writers find irresistible. Alas, few children's editors agree. Finding a home for that cute bunny story may be almost as difficult as, well, finding a real talking animal. On the other hand, publishers of children's nonfiction are often desperate for good manuscripts from talented writers. I'd never suggest that a children's fiction writer turn to nonfiction simply because there's more market potential. But I would suggest that if you can adjust your creative flow to include researching and writing interesting nonfiction pieces that children will enjoy, you might just see your name in print more often and your bank account filled with a few more bucks. Here are some practical reasons why you might want to consider nonfiction:
