Early Childhood Education Center
Illinois Valley Community College Abstract Introduction In the spring of 1999, I offered to teach a one-credit-hour class on the Project Approach on-site at a child care center in Princeton, Illinois, a small town in north central Illinois. I was delighted on the first night of class to find that the members of this class included teachers from three types of part-time early childhood programs. With great interest, I watched, listened, and documented the experiences of implementing the Project Approach that these teachers shared during our weekly class meetings. I was curious to see whether their experiences would support my earlier claim that doing project work provides continuity to programs in which children do not attend full time, or in which children follow irregular attendance patterns ( Beneke, 1998

Passports
Promote multicultural awareness and self esteem with this early childhood education activity by Matina Materials: Paper and a camera. Description: We made passports by stapling white paper to construction paper. Then from January until May we studied a different country. We studied Russia, Africa, Ireland, Israel, China, Antarctica, Australia, Mexico, Japan, France, Hawaii, and Saudi Arabia. Then for each country the youngsters wore a hat or a prop from that country (ex: France, beret). We took pictures of each child wearing his or her hat or prop. Then I glued the pictures into each child's individual passport and gave it to them along with a world traveler certificate at the end of the year. They had lots of fun "dressing up!" World Passport

LIFE'S LITTLE LESSONS P.D. PRUDEN VO-TECH ADDED SOME NEW ``EQUIPMENT'' TO ITS CHILD-CARE CAREER-TRAINING PROGRAM EARLY THIS YEAR. TWO EARLY START CLASSROOMS COMPLETE WITH THIRTY-TWO 4-YEAR-OLDS.
THE YOUNGEST students at P.D. Pruden Vocational-Technical Center this year are barely 3 feet tall and lean toward Power Ranger backpacks and Bugs Bunny sneakers. They are 4-year-olds - part of the Early Start programs of Suffolk and Isle of Wight County. The energetic tots also are important elements of a new child-care career-training program at Pruden. Started last year, the program is based in the wing in which horticulture students used to cultivate young seedlings. The demise of the horticulture program left room to create a classroom and two laboratory classrooms to house the new program, where secondary students learn to nurture the human variety of young sprouts. Stephanie Hall, 17, and a junior at Nansemond River High School, works part time after school with 2-year-olds at the First Baptist preschool in downtown Suffolk. She signed up for the child-care career block to better prepare herself for a career as a kindergarten teacher. ``It has been a lot more work than I expected,'' Stephanie admitted.

Guidelines for Evaluating Child Care Providers The Child Care Provider
How you evaluate a child care provider or teacher depends not only on your personal standards and preferences, but also on the age, temperament, and particular needs of your child. Is the center or home day care provider licensed? Can the provider offer parent references? If needed, is there transportation between the school and center? Is there a waiting list and, if so, how long is the anticipated wait? Find out if the program is closed for vacation and what holidays are observed. Also find out what happens when the provider/ teaching staff is sick. Who are the staff members with whom your child will have contact? If it is a private day care home, are members of the day care provider's family involved? Formal training in child development and early childhood education can vary widely among providers, ranging from no formal education to teaching credentials and Master's degrees. Are the staff able to care for children with special physical, medical, or emotional needs? There are, however, important values that all high quality care providers share. They are warm people who love children and relate to them well. These providers always treat children with respect and are able to set behavioral limits without being punitive or damaging to the child's self-esteem. The best way to draw an accurate impression of a child care provider is to spend time observing the provider's interactions with children during a variety of activities.

Allegheny County Early Childhood Initiative
Description In Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, the Early Childhood Initiative (ECI) is making quality early childhood education more accessible to low-income families. The goal of Allegheny County ECI, a program of United Way, is to create high-quality early education services for up to 4,000 currently unserved children in 80 targeted high-risk neighborhoods in and around Pittsburgh. Allegheny County ECI is based on a philosophy of neighborhood decision-making. Designated neighborhoods are asked to develop a local plan for early childhood services and to choose a lead agency to be responsible for implementation. To date, ECI has received funding commitments of $36 million and approved and funded 10 lead agencies covering 36 neighborhoods for activities such as building new child care centers, expanding family child care, creating early literacy programs, and helping providers to become licensed. Partners Allegheny County Early Childhood Initiative is a program of the United Way of Allegheny County. Partner organizations include:

This booklet has been prepared by the Community Care Facilities Branch of the British Columbia Ministry of Health and Ministry Responsible for Seniors. As a caregiver for small children, it is important to be aware of fire and life safety issues. Young children are very vulnerable. The information contained in this booklet will help you provide a safe environment for children in your Family Child Care Setting.
    Fire Safety Assessments
As a provider of Family Child Care, you must ensure that the children you care for are safe. Although fire departments do not have a mandate to conduct fire inspections for Family Child Care, most of these departments have personnel who are qualified to conduct Fire Safety Assessments. Lessons on Voting While U.S. citizens must be 18 years old to vote, it is never too early to learn about voting, elections, and democracy in America. Teaching children about voting will show them how important each person is in a democracy and how citizens choose their leaders. Thus, this "In the Classroom" provides ways for you to effectively plan and teach your kids about voting as well as encourage and remind their parents about Election Day. Vote on Classroom Activities
    • Explain that voting is a fair way for groups of people to decide on important issues, and then allow them to vote throughout the day for the activities they would like to do. For example, allow them to vote on which book they would like to read.
    Throw an Election Day Party
    • Plan an Election Day party for children and parents and make it a celebration for the right to vote. Talk with the children about the upcoming election for President. Encourage them to ask their parents if they are going to vote, who they will vote for, and why. Give each child a self-stick name badge with the words "
