Child sexual abuse/incest
Incest is said to have occurred when sexual contact or sexual relations occur between people in an extended family. Incest may include inappropriate touching, forced object penetration of the vagina and/or rectum, exposing one's genitals, forced sexual and/or anal intercourse and forced oral sex. Incest may also occur in cases where there is an imbalance of power, such as between a student and a teacher or between a stepparent and a stepchild. Incest affects both male and female children, although many people are reluctant to talk about it because it happens in the family and family is supposed to be a safe place for children. Child sexual abuse occurs when an adult or an adolescent uses a child for their own sexual gratification. In addition to fondling, open exhibitionism, forced sexual and/or anal intercourse and forced oral sex, child sexual abuse may also include juvenile prostitution, photographing nude children and sexual exploitation through child pornography, and masturbating in front of a child.

ISSUES IN FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY
Terence W. Campbell, Ph. D. Thank you for your visiting Dr. Terence Campbell's web site. As a clinical and forensic psychologist, Dr. Campbell emphasizes the necessity of psychologists relying on relevant research in all their endeavors. Too often, however, the testimony of psychologists, psychiatrists, and other mental health professionals relies more on unverified theory than empirical fact. As expert witnesses, mental health professionals pose difficult problems for the legal system. As seriously flawed as their testimony can be, such errors are not readily recognizable except by those well-acquainted with the relevant research literature. Though a mental health professional's testimony may be riddled with errors, their technical vocabularies - and the numerical scores associated with test data - can create an impressive appearance of expertise. Without the assistance of a knowledgeable mental health professional, attorneys who attempt to cross-examine self-appointed experts in this area can find themselves rapidly floundering. This web site has been designed to assist attorneys in effectively cross-examining mental health professionals. Above all else, Dr. Campbell advocates that expert testimony premised on relevant research can assist courts. Expert testimony that resorts to ill-conceived theories, however, threatens to mislead and misinform a trier of fact. Dr. Campbell assists attorneys in identifying expert testimony supported by relevant research, versus expert testimony premised on ill-conceived theories.

Over the past 20 years our understanding of the complex problems of child abuse and neglect has increased dramatically. This increased knowledge has improved our ability to intervene effectively in the lives of troubled families. Likewise, we have a better grasp of what we can do to prevent child abuse and neglect from occurring. Clearly, we have made great strides. However, our efforts to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect must continue to grow and improve. We have learned that a child of any age, sex, race, religion, and socioeconomic background can fall victim to child abuse and neglect. We have learned that a large number of children who are abused and neglected are never reported to the authorities who can help them and their families. We have learned that we need to provide help and support to victims of child abuse and neglect as well as to their parents. And most important, we have learned that child abuse and neglect is a community concern. No one agency or professional alone can prevent and treat the problem; rather all concerned citizens must work together to effectively identify, prevent, and treat child abuse and neglect This Java Applet Banner will run continuously, displaying the 13 Missing Children Alert Cases.
