(last revised 6/10/2005) I am a researcher and therapist with a doctorate (Ph.D.) in clinical psychology. I have conducted survey research on rates of child abuse. I have also studied the lasting effects of child abuse - initially the psychological and behavioral effects in men, more recently effects on biology and the regulation of emotion. I am a licensed clinical psychologist, and for 15 years I have been a therapist to men and women abused in childhood, providing individual and group treatment. My main collaborators include Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, a leader in the psychological trauma field at The Trauma Center and Boston University. I am currently a Research Fellow at the Behavioral Psychopharmacology Research Laboratory at the Neuroimaging Center of McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School. In this position I am focusing on studies of substance abuse in people with histories of child abuse and PTSD. If you are interested in my professional services , which include psychotherapy, talks, workshops, and consultations, please visit that page. The contents of this page reflect my level of experience and expertise, as well as opinions I have formed over the years.

KIDS' STORIES

FOR PARENTS
... EVENTS You are visitor: Your Comments, Questions and Suggestions are Invited! New Leadership Dear Friends, Please join us in celebration! We have been successful in our quest to begin our second century of service to Colorado as a locally operated not-for-profit agency, no longer under the domain of a national parent company. And many thanks to you and the individuals in our community who helped and supported Tennyson Center for Children at Colorado Christian Home as we worked to successfully separate from the National Benevolent Association (NBA). To give you a brief overview of what has transpired, the former local board of directors of Tennyson Center for Children, who were dismissed by the NBA last September, regrouped and formed a local 501c3, the Friends of Children. Following NBA's dismissal of our local board, the financially struggling NBA entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in February of this year and on August 11, 2004 announced to our management team that it was closing Tennyson Center for Children. After a long ordeal and much travail, Friends of Children successfully negotiated an agreement with the NBA and the creditors committee. That agreement was signed, sealed, and delivered on October 5, 2004 and ensures the future of Tennyson Center and the continuance of our critically important services to abused and neglected children in Colorado. Tennyson Center is no longer a party to the bankruptcy proceedings unfortunately overshadowing the NBA. If you would like more information about this please see

Letters from kids about parental discipline
I'm 14 and think my mom is way too strict. All of my friends have a curfew of 2 a.m. on the weekends, and my mom sets mine at 11 p.m. How can I get her to change her mind? In most situations, 2 a.m. is too late for a person your age to be home on any night. In fact, in some cities, suburbs, and even rural communities, there are legal curfews stating at what time people under age 18 or 16 must be home. Perhaps your friends' parents don't care. Wouldn't this be worse? Imagine if you came to the dinner table every night and your mother was slumped on the sofa, drinking a beer and watching TV? Try to be thankful for the fact that your mother does care about you. Sit down and talk with her about what your friends go out to do so late at night and explain why you want to be out late. Perhaps there's an alternative way to have the same fun without being out so late. Is it okay to spank children? We talked about it at school and our book about family living said it was not. But the teacher said children "needed" a swat now and then when they acted really bad. I'm confused.

17. False Allegations Of Child Abuse
Information from someone available as a medical expert in cases in which he's convinced that an allegation of child abuse is false.
http://www.pathguy.com/abuse.htm
False Allegations of Child Abuse When I was an associate medical examiner for Jackson County, I got a lot of enjoyment from assisting with the prosecution of real criminals, and putting bad people where they belong. When child abuse has really occurred, it is a dreadful thing, and the perpetrators deserve to be punished as examples to others. The system is imperfect, and occasionally an innocent person is accused on bad medical evidence. Once the initial error is made, it is very hard to stop the process. On the strength of this evidence, the Department of Human Services told the court, "The perpetrator has been identified" as the grandfather, the evidence being that he owned a Hallowe'en mask. They told him that if he admitted his crime and got counselling, the child would be restored to the mother. The entire family refused. I was the sole medical witness for the defense, which I took for free. We won. From now on, I am available as a medical expert in other cases in which I'm convinced that an allegation of child abuse is false. I do not charge for an initial chat, and I do the cases where the person is clearly innocent pro bono.
