Despite a lack of active grandmasters, masters, and experts (we have one, Ruth Donnelly. Oh, and then there's newly re-activated Rick Callahan...), the C'Ville area has two, perhaps three, fairly active clubs, one coffee house featuring a weekly chess night, a game store featuring a weekly chess night, and one bookstore/cafe occasionally holding tournaments. Note that this information was valid in the mid-90's, things may have changed since then...

The Charlottesville Chess Club
Club Meetings
Meets Monday nights at about 7:30 in the basement of St. Marks Church at the corner of Ivy and Alderman (go in through the door with the lion above it, then through the door and down the stairs in the other side of the room). Attendance ranges from 6 to nearly 20, with most players ranging in strength from USCF 1400 to 1600. Newcomers are welcome. There is no membership fee. Bring a set or clock if you have one. Note that the Charlottesville Chess Club is grateful to St. Marks for the use of their space.
Tournaments and Team Matches
The C'Ville club is trying to coordinate itself enough to play a match against a team from Richmond. Interested C'Villians are welcome to stop on by at one of the next few club meetings if they'd like to participate.

There is car parking at the school and we are asked to if possible avoid using the stairs at the main entrance when arriving or leaving. If on any particular week we have to meet in another room we will leave a note on the door of A14 so you can find out where we have gone! Our club has now been running continuously for over 10 years, it was founded in 1994. During last year we had very good attendances, including some meetings with more than juniors playing. This is the biggest attendance we have had in all the years that the club has been running. We have also had some excellent chess teaching from Nick Jackson of Chess for Kids The Chess Shield and Go Shield competitions will continue to be held each autumn and spring. The winner of each will keep the trophy for the next six months. The current champions are Chris Davison (Chess) and Matthew Harris (Go). For information about past winners, see the

The Dubuque Chess Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of (pawns and) chess education throughout the local and tri-state community. An affiliate of the United States Chess Federation (USCF) and one of the oldest active chess clubs in North America, it is the host of the annual Louis Paulsen Dubuque Open, honoring the club's founder, German master Louis Paulsen, who was one of the few chessplayers to ever give the great Paul Morphy a real run for his money. Since that time, the chessic torch has been passed and still burns brightly in historic downtown Dubuque.

A scholastic chess club provides a challenge for students while helping build chess club provides a place to meet, practice, learn, teach and develop
http://www.ohiochess.org/starting.htm
STARTING A SCHOLASTIC CHESS PROGRAM
Scholastic chess in the United States has grown dramatically in recent years and Ohio scholastic chess has followed suit. Many schools have started or expanded chess programs to provide students with the opportunity to participate in this stimulating activity.
The U.S. Chess Federation (USCF) , the not-for-profit governing and promotional body for chess in the United States, now has over 85,000 members, including more than 30,000 scholastic members. And there are many thousands of student chess players across the country who are not USCF members.
Through its Scholastic Chess Committee , the Ohio Chess Association (oca) promotes and supports scholastic chess in the Buckeye State. Any public or private school in the state may participate.
STARTING A LocaL CHESS PROGRAM
Why would a school want a chess club for students? The game of chess helps young people learn to concentrate, think logically, overcome obstacles, spot patterns and categorize information. It helps with the development of problem-solving skills, planning, patience, focus of thought and self-discipline. Chess is a competitive activity but good sportsmanship and fair play are taught as essential elements of the game.
Chess is an individual activity, yet teamwork is an important element. Club members practice together and work on problems together. Everyone has a chance to contribute to the team in tournament play as chess clubs may enter as many players as they wish and various skill-level or age-based sections are generally available.
