Scholastic Chess Club Plan
Chess Club Plans Do Vary
This is how one organizer went about forming a new scholastic chess club that meets in an upper elementary school (grades 5 and 6). This plan was fine tuned following the first and second years. Granted, there's a lot of detail here and you may choose to use the contents links to simply focus on where you are in the process or refer back to specific items. With this tool, you'll be able to go through the process much more smoothly and quickly than I did, and be glad you did. If you're a school faculty person wanting to start a club, some of the early steps may already be virtually complete. It's best to begin the process of forming a new chess club about a month before school begins. However, it can be accomplished any time during the first half of the school year. Meeting in a school carries along certain requirements that may not apply for another location. Your situation may be different in this and other respects, requiring some modification to the plan. For example, a K-4 program may have less emphasis on tournament preparation under similar conditions. Conversely, high school clubs may require less supervisory structure with members as club officers conducting the meetings for themselves. The important thing is to have a well thought out plan for the formation of the new club, so that your effort goes smoothly and is more likely to succeed. If you have a different plan for a different situation to submit for others to access on this web site, please contact the

On Friday, Princeton chess club members Brandon Ashe '04, Jonathan Heckman '04, Ian Prevost '05 and Samson Benen '07, traveled to Trenton to play chess against inmates at the maximum-security New Jersey State Prison.
Each student played 13 to 14 inmates simultaneously. At the end of the three hours of play, the chess club picked up 50 wins and three draws. Two prisoners managed to win their games. The relationship between the prison and the chess club began last year when BeneCard Services, Inc., a local prescription drug distributor, looked for people to play against inmates. John Marshall, a vice president at BeneCard, contacted Ashe, the club president, who gladly accepted. "Chess is an activity that prisoners can engage in, so its good to encourage it," Heckman said. "We have fun playing [and] we want to share the fun with other people."

History of the Mechanics Institute chess Club.
    http://www.chessclub.org/hist.html
A Short History Of Chess In San Francisco
Probably the oldest chess club in continuous existence in the nation, the Mechanics' Institute was organized on December 11, 1854. In June of 1855, it was established in a $25.-a-month room in the Express Building at the corner of Montgomery and California streets. Thanks to gifts and bequests to its endowment fund, various activities such as the old Industrial Fairs, and enhancement from investments, the institute now owns its own building at 57 Post Street and has a substantial amount of invested capital. In 1929 Alexander Alekhine suffered an unheard-of number of reverses in a simultaneous exhibition; at the conclusion of his tour, a European journalist asked him where he found the strongest opposition. "In San Francisco, in a place called the Mechanics' Institute," replied Alekhine. Dr. W. R. Lovegrove In his first days as a member of the Mechanics' Institute, Vladimir met one of the pre-eminent players there, Dr. W. R. Lovegrove, arguably one of the strongest non-tournament chess players in the world at the time. Vladimir was fortunate to have been able to play the Doctor on a regular basis. Tournaments in those days were very rare and these games gave Vladimir a chance to polish his game, especially his endgame. Dr. Walter Romain Lovegrove, master emeritus of the U. S. Chess Federation, died in San Francisco on July 18, 1956, at 86 years of age. The following excerpt from the California Chess Reporter (by Dr. H. J. Ralston) gives a clear idea of how strong he was.
