The Internet Chess Club's pay-to-play formula wins on the Web

(IDG) Don't tell Daniel Sleator the membership model doesn't work for online gaming sites. Sleator's site admittedly isn't the usual venue for preteens wielding swords, spells or space blasters in the latest multiplayer shoot-'em-up extravaganzas. But perhaps that's precisely the reason for his success. Instead, Sleator's patrons play a game that's, oh, about 2,000 years old. And they spend $49 a year for a relatively low-tech experience in Sleator's Internet Chess Club (ICC), despite the availability of free chess services elsewhere online. What's most unusual about the ICC (www.chessclub.com) is that it's growing—with 20,000 paying members at last count—and it's profitable. Other online game sites have tried unsuccessfully for years to support themselves with membership fees. In fact, the model has worked for only a handful of businesses, says Seema Williams, an analyst in the consumer e-commerce group at Forrester Research Inc. in Cambridge, Mass. One such business is Ultima Online (www.ultimaonline.com), the multiplayer fantasy world run by San Mateo, Calif.-based Origin Systems Inc. Most other gaming spots rely on ad banners for income. ButICC's formula—offering unlimited online play in exchange for an annual membership fee—seems to be working just fine.

Tournaments and Events Page Notes about chess clubs 1. Clubs are NOT just for good players. They are for anyone who wants to attend and play. If a club restricted itself to "good" players it would probably go out of business pretty quickly. 2. You don't have to be able to make a club every week to join (or attend) . No club could exist if they required you to attend 52 weeks a year! 3. Everyone is a stranger the first time they attend a club. But if the club is friendly and you are amenable, that won't last long. 4. Club doesn't have an activity you want? Volunteer to run such an activity. That usually works. Main Line Chess Club (link has more info, map) at Gladwyne, PA on Tues 7 PM - 2 great playing rooms
