These study guides will give you an idea what is on the assessment tests. The questions and answers are examples of the kinds of problems you'll encounter during the assessment process. Please remember that the scores on the assessment tests are only one measure the college uses to place students into Math, English, College Skills, Chemistry and ESL classes. For instance, we also consider your high school academic history, how long you've been out of school, whether you're a full or part-time student, etc. The purpose of the math tests is for you to find out what you remember and what you've forgotten of the math you've had. Which test should you take?
    • English - places you into an College Skills or English course. It also gives you a pretty good idea of your reading comprehension, and sentence structure skills. With this information, a counselor can help you choose the right classes to ensure your academic success.
      Math Competency Exam
(MCT) - Passing this exam will satisfy your math requirement for the associate degree. Important Note: the Math Competency Exam will not transfer nor satisfy your math requirement.

Most US medical schools and many non-US schools require applicants to submit MCAT scores. The MCAT, or Medical College Admission Test, consists of sections on Verbal Reasoning, Physical Sciences, Writing Sample, and Biological Sciences. The MCAT can be intimidating, so you might consider purchasing a study guide or review text. The Kaplan and Princeton Review MCAT guides are excellent choices.
  • Kaplan MCAT Resources
Even if you aren't taking the accompanying review course, the Kaplan MCAT Review is an excellent study guide. The Kaplan Review clearly defines the important concepts used in the test. The Kaplan Review is also the easiest review material to locate, so less expensive used books are sometimes available. If you are good at self-study, I think the review guide and practice tests will be enough to help you get great scores. Take the course if you do better with support from other students and an instructor who can clarify concepts. Kaplan offers a money-back guarantee on their course: "if for any reason you don't raise your overall score, you can study with us again for free or get your money back."
  • Princeton Review Resources
  • Other MCAT Resources
In addition to the MCAT Student Manual and the review courses, there are numerous publications covering medical college selection, admissions, and financial aid. 'Examkrackers' offers several publications, although I haven't reviewed them so I can't comment on their quality. For free resources (well... except that you are paying for the exam), the MCAT Student Manual is available at the MCAT web site and accompanies your registration materials. You can find additional study guides, reviews, and practice tests on-line, at campus bookstores, and at used bookstores.

Some of the lecture notes include links to other biochemistry web sites with useful materials such as models and animations. I often use the font "symbol" for arrows, Greek letters etc. This font is often not loaded by Explorer, so if you see funny symbols or inappropriate letters that's probably what's happening. As a common example, " " is an arrow.

Ten ways to pass your next chemistry exam
  • Don't bother cramming. It won't work. Cramming puts things into your short term memory- and if you're exhausted, it's very short term. You should study throughout the week before the exam, so that when the day to take the exam comes, you will feel confident of your preparation.
  • Practice. You can't memorize a page of a Spanish dictionary every day and expect to be able to speak the language next year. You have to use the vocabulary you've learned in context, or it will slip away almost as fast as you learn it. The same is true of chemistry. You must do as many problems from the text, study guides, and notes as you can. The more practice you get, the richer your understanding of the underlying chemical concepts becomes.
  • Read with your eyes closed. Study your notes and your textbook carefully. Then close your books and sit on them . Take out a sheet of paper and begin outlining the material you have been studying. You'll see, very quickly, where further study is required. You must do the same thing in solving problems from the end of the chapter readings. Do not look at worked examples as templates. Simply substituting numbers from your problem into the corresponding places in the example sometimes gets you the right answer, but you won't know why. And when you are presented with a minor variation in the problem on a test, you won't be flexible enough to handle it.
