Thirty years ago when I took AP Chemistry, I cannot remember ever having a lesson in Chemistry. What theory I had was given standing around the front bench. Theory was explanation to justify why we were doing the laboratory work for that day. There were no chairs or tables, except for the electronic balances kept behind paneled glass. Coming back to High School, we have come full circle. Labs are the explanation to justify the paper work and theory for the lesson. Previously I had never thought of Chemistry as theoretical—but it was the hay day of kitchen chemistry when photographic memories were a blessing. Much of what I learned then is not in High School books anymore. Memory now plays a small part. Chemistry is more like Physics—theory learned with mathematics. Chemistry was exciting and dangerous. Now its danger is recognized as more insidious and liability incalculable. Contemporary intellectual elegance in Chemistry and technological advances have streamlined and made redundant the endless chemical analyses and titrations of a former era. However I feel we are left with a crisis. The swing from kitchen to computerized chemistry has emptied the motivation and drama from Chemistry.

GCSE Chemistry > Hard Water
Hard water does not produce as much lather as soft water when it is used with soap and also an insoluble solid called scum is left on the sides of the wash basin. Calcium chloride, Magnesium nitrate, and Iron (II) Sulphate produce scum and no lather when contained in a sample of water that is mixed with soap. The ions that are responsible for "Hard Water" are therefore as follows:
  • Ca
  • Mg
  • Fe
Hard water is formed by 2 main methods:

Water chemistry for ponds lakes and streams
At this stage of the planning process we need a general idea of the water chemistry of your habitat. We do not need to have a professional lab analysis until we get to the final design. If you go to your local aquarium or pond shop, you will find a number of inexpensive test kits that will suit our purposes for describing your general water chemistry. Lately we have been using a very quick and convenient test kit from Jungle Laboratories called the "Quick Dip Pond Test Kit". (a new window will open. Let the window completely load before scrolling.) These are very handy litmus paper type strips our biologists can carry in their shirt pockets as long as they remain dry. We have provided a link to Jungle Labs for your convenience. There are other kits available; we use this one because of its convenience and comprehensive results. Be sure to follow all instructions carefully when testing your water!
