PERSONNEL REPORTS RESEARCH ... CONTACT The Center for Global Change Science CGCS ) at MIT was established in January, 1990, to address long-standing scientific problems that impede our ability to accurately predict changes in the global environment. The CGCS is interdisciplinary , involving both research and education , and builds on the long-established programs in meteorology oceanography hydrology chemistry , and satellite remote sensing carried out in the Schools of Science and Engineering at MIT. In addition, the CGCS , along with the MIT Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research CEEPR ), is a parent organization of the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change , which involves significant cross-discipline interaction
The long-term goal of the CGCS is to utilize theory and observations to understand the basic processes and mechanisms controlling the global environment, and thereby to accurately predict environmental changes. Initial objectives involve a sustained program of basic scientific research focused on five fundamental processes in the global climate machine:
  • Convection, Atmospheric Water Vapor, and Cloud Formation

This difference is due to the much higher heat capacity of water than of air. Offered here is an interesting life science application of water's high heat capacity and its serious implications for the maintenance of body temperature and the prevention of hypothermia in warm-blooded animals.

There are 1.7 million deaths each year related to unsafe water, mostly among children under five.
It is estimated that there are 4 billion cases of diarrhea annually, which represents 4.5% of the global burden of disease.
One sixth of humanity currently lacks access to any form of improved water supply within one kilometer of their homes. The Millennium Declaration Goal was to halve the proportion of people unable to reach or afford safe drinking water by 2015. To achieve this would require at least 125 000 unserved people to be connected to safe water supplies each day before the 2015 target! Professor Pierre Potier, a leading government advisor and member of the French Academy of Science opened the IUPAC conference, which also received the high patronage of the President of the French Republic, Jacques Chirac. Speakers and attendees from five continents spent three days hearing about new developments in chemistry and chemical engineering that are helping purify and provide water more efficiently in order to reach the Millennium Declaration Goal. A series of workshops enabled delegates to look at specific problems and share their views. The industrial and municipal demands for water supplies, and its quality, vary from country to country. For example, the electronics industry requires ultra-pure water that contains only a few parts per trillion of impurities for computer chip manufacturing. On the other hand, people in poor countries often drink untreated water from sources also used for bathing and care of animals.

Chemical sciences and technologies are needed to resolve water-related problems and issues such as scarcity, purification, waste treatment, control, and analysis.. This conference will explore the latest scientific and engineering approaches to these problems and issues to develop world-wide strategies and policy recommendations, focusing on the common interests of academic institutions, corporations, governmental agencies and the general public. Objectives
  • Define scientific gaps, research priorities, economic and social priorities in order to provide decision makers in governments, industry, academia, and especially the mass media with the chemical knowledge required for understanding the present and future role of chemistry in resolving water- related problems and issues. Conduct an objective assessment of the technical state-of-the-art in chemistry and chemical engineering in the domains of fresh water availability and avoiding water pollution.

The snowpack has been sampled during both the accumulation and ablation stages at as many as 13 sites within the Turkey Lakes Watershed, Algoma, central Ontario, Canada since 1980 although more quantitative surveys began in 1989. Snow depth and a physical description of the snowpack have been recorded at each station. Snow density, water equivalent and chemistry (pH, major ions, and nutrients) have been determined. Water Chemistry
Water - you know your life depends upon it, but how much do you really know about it? Water covers 4/5 of our planet, so it is readily available, yet water is one of the earth's most precious resources. Fresh water is precious not only because we need it to live, but also because only about 3% of all the earth's water is usable. Of the water on earth, only about one percent is available as fresh water for people to use. The majority, 97%, is salt water in the oceans; the rest is locked in the ice caps or groundwater. Water is made from one oxygen atom bound to two hydrogen atoms. The formula for this is H2O. Water is usually found in its liquid state, but is also common in its gaseous state as vapor in the air, or as a solid (frozen). It is the only substance in nature which is commonly found in all three states. As the forms of water change, water moves from the sky to the earth and back to the sky again. This is called the water cycle. For more information on the water cycle, and other water chemistry issues, click on the links below.
