CHEMISTRY LIBRARY UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN - MADISON Chemistry Journal Cost Study This study represents the fourth discipline-specific journal cost study undertaken by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries. Data for physics, economics and neuroscienceas well as more specific information about methodologymay be found at the following URL: http://www.library.wisc.edu/projects/glsdo/cost.html . These studies have proven to be very useful to librarians on this campus as they make the nearly annual decisions about which journals to retain. We also hope that scientists, who are becoming increasingly sensitized to journal cost issues, will use this data to make informed decisions about which journals to support with their contributions, editing and reviewing. The resulting number provides, we believe, a reasonable indicatorif not a precise measureof the cost effectiveness of each title. The CLIC Electronic Chemistry Journal Project CLIC is a project from the Electronic Journals area of the Electronic Libraries Programme Henry Rzepa , from the Chemistry Department at Imperial College, explains the need for journals in the field of Chemistry that use leading edge technology for molecular information storage, retrieval and manipulation. hemistry is one of the most visual and "three dimensional" of sciences. For many generations, communication of the subject has been rooted on the printed pages of chemical journals, with even colour a rare event. Partially because of such limitations, the subject has evolved a complex and arcane symbolism for its written representation. The complexities of this "chemical nomenclature" in turn result in substantial risk of the propagation of errors and misinterpretation of results. A refereeing system exists to catch both errors of science and transcription errors, but the reality is that referees have few "tools" to assist them to catch errors on the printed page other than then own eyes and minds!
