Overview
" Principles of Alchemy (Chemistry) " is a self-paced, self-learning program specifically designed to teach Chemistry on your computer. Students may range from the bright child demanding an accelerated program to someone seeking his/her own self-fulfillment by learning Chemistry.
Alchemy is for everyone and Alchemy is specifically designed with the needs of home schoolers in mind. Alchemy is NOT a series of "simulation" programs that provide only a brief explanation of the science. Nor does Alchemy abandon the student with a dry science book that s/he is expected to wade through. You do not need a high cost multimedia package or be a Net-guru to learn Alchemy (Chemistry) from Merlin. There are no CD-ROMs, VCR tapes, MOOs or MUDs. There is no "C-U-see-me" nonsense or Java jive. Merlin started teaching Chemistry over the Internet in 1995. He and his students relied heavily on email (and IRC) for communications and clarification in the early development of the course. From that feedback, Merlin learned where students had the most difficulty and rewrote or added new material to the hypertextbook. Now, many years later, Principles of Alchemy has evolved into a complete self-learning Chemistry course - tried and tested by students of a variety of ages and backgrounds.

I Want To Be A Paleontologist !
Advice for Students and Parents
Paleontological Research Institution
Ithaca, NY There is no luckier person than the person who can make their passion their career. Most professional paleontologists are just such lucky people. They are people consumed with a passion to understand the history of life on earth. Paleontology is fun, thrilling, and fascinating, but it is also hard work. It is not "easier" than the more traditional "core" science disciplines of physics, chemistry, biology, or geology. In many ways, paleontology is more difficult than any other science because to be a good paleontologist you must know a great deal about all of these fields. Paleontology is among the broadest of sciences.
What is paleontology?
What background do I need in high school?
The best starting point is a college preparatory program with as many science and math courses as possible. Outside reading in paleontology and visiting museums with fossil displays is helpful for building up knowledge of fossils themselves. No matter how interested or knowledgeable a student is in paleontology, however, good overall grades in high school are almost always required for admission to a good college or university, which is a necessary prerequisite for a career in paleontology.
What background do I need in college?

Welcome to the American Chemistry Council’s Long-Range Research Initiative Web Site
Through the Long-Range Research Initiative (LRI), the chemical industry sponsors research to expand scientific knowledge of the potential impacts that chemicals may have on the health of human and wildlife populations and the environment. The LRI expands the industry’s commitment to Responsible Care® – the chemical industry’s global initiative to improve environment, health, and safety. Responsible Care® pledges each member company of ACC to extend scientific knowledge through the conduct or support of research, to make continuous improvements in product stewardship through better testing and screening tools, and to support science-based public policy decisions. The LRI awards research contracts to institutions based on highest scientific merit and relevance to the program’s mission and objectives through a competitive Request for Proposals ( RfPs ) process. The LRI is sponsoring projects at leading research institutes, government agencies, academic institutes, and independent research organizations. For example, the CIIT Centers for Health Research ( CIIT ) is a renowned leader in environmental health sciences research and education. For over 25 years, CIIT has contributed science that guides sound regulatory decisions and protects the health of the public.

    Banned By Gaussian
Who is Gaussian, Inc.? In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Pople group at Carnegie-Mellon University began to develop a general purpose computer code, based on the use of gaussian basis functions, in order to enable molecular electronic structure calculations. The initial computer program, called Gaussian70, was made freely available to users via the Quantum Chemistry Program Exchange (QCPE). Subsequent versions, through Gaussian80, were distributed in the same manner. After 1980, in order to recoup development costs for the increasingly popular program, a small charge was implemented for subsequent versions of the Gaussian code. Professor Pople , the recipient of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, has not been associated with Gaussian, Inc. since 1991. The departure (and subsequent "banning") of Professor Pople from the Gaussian project marked a sad day for science, a day in which commerce trumped science and loyalty. The goal of this site is to shed light on some practices of Gaussian, Inc. that can undermine basic scientific ideals.

Is there any information on the prize amounts?
There is a table of the prize amounts in Swedish kronor (SEK).
Why is the Nobel Peace Prize awarded in Oslo and all the other prizes in Stockholm?
Alfred Nobel left no explanation as to why the prize for peace was to be awarded by a Norwegian committee while the other four prizes were to be handled by Swedish committees. In the will he wrote:
"The prizes for physics and chemistry shall be awarded by the Swedish Academy of Sciences; that for physiology or medical works by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm; that for literature by the Academy in Stockholm, and that for champions of peace by a committee of five persons to be elected by the Norwegian Storting."
