Chemistry at the Weizmann Institute: A Concise History
by Moshe Levy and Gershom (Jan M.L.) Martin Draft document under heavy editing - caveat lector The story of the Institute begins in 1933 when Dr. Chaim Weizmann , chemist and longtime World Zionist Organization leader, decided to establish a center of scientific research in Re h ovot, which was then a small agricultural community in the British Mandate. With the help of his friends, Israel and Rebecca Sieff, they built a research institute that would bear the name of their son, Daniel. In the spring of 1934, the Daniel Sieff Research Institute came into existence. The Institute also housed the private library of Fritz Haber - a unique collection on the history and philosophy of science. At that time the Daniel Sieff Research Institute had two main branches of science: organic chemistry and biochemistry. The staff included 10 full-time scientists that dealt mainly with problems connected to the country's economy: citrus, dairy, silk and tobacco, as well as the synthesis of chemical products of medical value. In 1939, World War II broke out and it was both natural and inevitable that the scientific staff of the Sieff Institute would become deeply involved in the war effort, especially in the production of pharmaceuticals - such as the anti-malarial drug Atabrine and the painkiller Evipan (hexobarbital) - and other chemicals that were essential for the war effort and for the local population.

Why is atomic number called "Z"? Why is mass number called "A"?
Serena 9/16/99
Vocabulary atomic number atomic weight isotope mass number ... x-ray spectrum "Atomic number" in German is "Atomzahl", so the Z symbol for atomic number probably comes from "Zahl" (number). The Encyclopedia of Symbols has a more poetic interpretation:
"The letter Z is one of the signs for the highest god in Greek mythology, Zeus. In modern physics Z represents the greatest energy, nuclear power, in its potential form, nuclear charge." [
M is sometimes used for mass number ("Massenzahl" in German), but A is the symbol recommended in the ACS Style Guide [ ]. The symbol may have been chosen so that the positions of the mass and atomic numbers are less likely to be confused in a nuclide symbol: A Z X

After having finished my studies at the E.N.S. (Ecole Normale Supérieure) and at the Faculté des Sciences de Paris, I contacted in October 1952 the small Theoretical Chemistry group formed by Mr. and Mrs. Pullman and G. Berthier in order to prepare a thesis. In that period the non-benzenoid aromatic hydrocarbons were under study in that laboratory. As for most parts of work being performed in Theoretical Chemistry, the method in use was the one of Hückel . The introduction, on the one part, of the configuration interaction (CI) and, on the other, of the SCF Roothaan method incited the Pullmans to leave the simple Hückel area in order to see what these new techniques could bring to our research work. Berthier was charged to study fulvene, reduced to its 6 pi-electrons, by the SCF. method while I myself was directed to apply CI on the same molecule, starting from the Hückel functions, the only ones which were available at that time.
    The work of Berthier
