168. Keith Taylor's Mathematical Chemistry Page
Some notes on asymptotic linearity phenomena observed in the laboratory setting with families of hydrocarbons.
http://math.usask.ca/~taylor/math.chem.html
Mathematical Chemistry Research Unit
My interest in mathematical questions from chemistry began in the early 80s from work on the symmetry groups of crystals. Through that work I established scholarly contact with chemists and became invoved with the formation of the Mathematical Chemistry Research Unit at the University of Saskatchewan. The unit is co-directed by Prof. Paul Mezey from the Department of Chemistry and myself. Its purpose is to facilitate collaborative work between mathematicians and chemists.
Asymptotic Properties
One of the current projects of the Mathematical Chemistry Research Unit that is of particular interest to me involves certain asymptotic linearity phenomena observed in the laboratory setting with families of hydrocarbons. The driving force behind this project is Prof. Shigeru Arimoto who has been studying these and related phenomena since 1978 and gave the first proof of the Asymptotic Linearity Theorem in 1987 which is fundamental to elucidate the mechanism of additivity phenomena in physico-chemical network systems. He has formulated the mathematical notion of a Repeat Space which he and collaborators used to explain the observed asymptotic linearities. These results suggested a multitude of other questions which we are investigating. I will sketch the mathematical setting below. Let q and r be fixed natural numbers.

T hanks for the coffee and the end-of-course party - it's great and it made teaching all worthwhile. Thank you very much! E veryone did reasonably well in the final, considering it's a pretty long exam. The unofficial grade is NOW posted outside C2-066C. Please note that this is the "unofficial" grade (i.e., the grades I've submitted to the Department) as one Dean on this campus has been known to change the grades unilaterally and without the instructor's knowledge. I f you still have a copy of Levine borrowed from my office, please drop it off in my office or labs so that the next class (if I were to teach this course again) can use these spare copies. Thanks.

Electrophilic Addition
(A Molecular Drama) Characters : Secondary carbon (Sec) is sharing four electrons with Primary Carbon (Prim) to form a propene molecule. Along comes a hungry electrophilic Hydrogen (Hyd) who is bonded to an electron-hogging Chlorine (Chlor). Hyd : Oh, look at all those electrons on that propene!
Chlor : What's with you? Aren't my electrons good enough for you?
Hyd : (disgusted) Your electrons. That's the whole trouble with you. They're our electrons, you pig!
Prim : Hi, Hydrogen! Nice nucleus!
Chlor : You keep your electrons away from my Hydrogen's nucleus!
Hyd : (to Propene) Would you share your electrons with little old me?
Prim and Sec : Yes!
Hyd : (Shoving electron pair at Chlorine) Here! Keep your precious electrons! I'm going to bond with someone who appreciates me.
(Hydrogen grabs one of the electron pairs shared by Secondary and Primary Carbons, and after a brief struggle, Secondary lets go, leaving Hydrogen bonded to Primary.)

Experiment, Models, Paper Tools: Cultures of Organic Chemistry in the Nineteenth Century, by Ursula Klein. Writing Science Series. Stanford, California, Stanford University Press, 2003. xi, 305 pp. $65.00 US (paper). Until the early nineteenth century, organic chemistry was the chemistry of substances occurring naturally in animal and vegetable matter, such as blood, digestive juices, and sap. Those substances were prepared by solvent extraction or, more destructively, by distillation. This form of chemistry was related to natural history, physiology, and the operations of living systems, and covered the gamut from pharmacy to the "vegetable staticks" of Stephen Hales. As late as 1800, chemists had identified fewer than one hundred naturally occurring organic substances, and the analysis of these substances (simply in terms of the relative weights of their constituent elements) proved very tricky.

But when you pump the gasoline for your car, you've probably noticed that it is clear. And there are so many other products that come from oil, including crayons, plastics, heating oil, jet fuel, kerosene, synthetic fibers and tires. How is it possible to start with crude oil and end up with gasoline and all of these other products? Photo courtesy Phillips Petroleum Company In this edition of HowStuffWorks , we will examine the chemistry and technology involved in refining crude oil to produce all of these different things!
