Highlights from UCL Chemistry Department From its inception University College London has pioneered education and science. To get a university degree in England at the beginning of last century you had to belong to the Church of England. University College was set up by subscription in 1826 and was widely supported by the Nonconformist, Roman Catholic and Jewish communities in the country. One of the many revolutionary aspects of the new university was that of having a Chair of Chemistry right from the outset, the first in England, which was held initially by Edward Turner Thomas Graham was the second Head of the Chemistry Department. Although he is best known for his Law of "Effusion" (diffusion), Graham also made some important early observations on colloids, on polybasic acids, and even on the uptake of dihydrogen by palladium. His effusion apparatus is shown below. In the 1890's William Ramsay was exploring the properties of gases. Lord Rayleigh's observation that the density of atmospheric nitrogen was slightly greater than that prepared by chemical means ultimately led Ramsay to isolate first argon in 1894 and, over the next few years, neon, krypton, and xenon. For this work, Ramsay was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 1904.

response to Rich Green, 1998
Introduction
Rigorous Proof and Exact Science
The so-called forensic reports of Leuchter, and Rudolf have for some time been used by Holocaust deniers as their chief argument - their ace in the hole - against the veracity of mass murder by gassing at Auschwitz-Birkenau. The argument goes that what is physically impossible cannot be true, no matter what testimonial evidence, documentary evidence, or physical evidence is amassed to demonstrate it. No number of witnesses suffices to prove that water can run uphill, and likewise all evidence regarding the Holocaust could be wiped away, if deniers could only prove that gassings were physically impossible. Thus it is, in the literature of denial, that we see great weight given to these three reports. In the late 1980s Leuchter was cited with great frequency, and now that distinction is gradually being passed to the work of Germar Rudolf. Possibly the pivotal moment in this line of argumentation came in 1988 when David Irving was so influenced by the Leuchter Report that he stepped into the deniers' camp - or at least, when the story is told, Leuchter gets credit for the conversion. The epiphany took place just before his testimony at the trial of Ernst Zundel. As described by Robert Lenski in

Description
This lively collection looks at science as filtered through literature, film, and television. It discusses classic works in science fiction and provides an in-depth look at the chemistry depicted in popular culture, particularly in Start Trek Star Wars , and Doctor Who . It includes an examination by Nebula Award winner Connie Willis of how science fiction authors use science, and reprints two tongue-in-cheek short stories by Isaac Asimov. The book also includes suggestions for using science fiction as an educational resource.
Reviews
"Science fiction is not just a literary genre but a subculture, with its own history, language, and behavior. In "[E]ditor Jack H. Stocker immerses the reader in this world of aliens and the supernatural, not to mention Sherlock Holmes and Han Solo. The book presents a thorough study of science fiction, useful for readers with varying knowledge of the SF world. Stocker's opening essay, 'A Science Fiction Primer for the Uninitiated', explores the subdivisions in the SF genre, such as hard science fiction (Asimov, Wells), space opera (The Star Wars Series), and horror (Dracula, Frankenstein). The essays that follow are contributed by academics for the most part, all of whom are active in the SF world as fans, scientists, and writers. . . . Some people may regard SF as merely a form of entertainment, but Stocker and his colleagues take it seriously, emphasizing its virtues and value in our society. They provide a fascinating slice of this 'alien' world."

Introduction: 1970-1993
The Changes since 1993
Several key infra-structures were introduced in 1993, which have dramatically changed the working model.
  • In 1993, the concept of a computer file started to transmute into that of a document. The term document implied that some sort of internal and predictable structure existed within the document, one that might even survive across subject disciplines, and also carried an implication that indexing of the document might be possible. A particular way of defining the structure of a document called hypertext-markup language or HTML became standard (currently implemented at level 3.2, and with level 4.0 now agreed), and freely available programs to display such documents known as "browsers" were introduced for the first time. In this scenario, the "session" began to be replaced by a standard mechanism to define the context between two or more documents, known as the URL, or Uniform Resource Locator, or more colloquially, the Internet hyperlink.
  • Although in the five years since 1993 the URL has become commonplace not merely in science, but in everyday life, it is worth looking at a URL in a little more detail

History of the Theory Sector of the Chemistry Department
Members of the Theoretical Sector have been at the forefront of discoveries in Theoretical Chemistry since the inception of the subject around 1930. We will confine our history to some of the people who have worked in the Sector. Professor Sir John Lennard-Jones (FRS), one of the founding fathers of molecular orbital theory, was appointed as the John Humphrey Plummer Professor of Theoretical Chemistry in 1933. Our library of PhD theses commences with two (non PhD) volumes (1933, 1934) by C A Coulson (FRS). One of these on 'Some problems in Molecular Structure' acknowledges the 'kindness and interest of L-J'. An early visitor to the Sector was W G Penney (FRS). We also have the thesis (1937) of S F Boys (FRS), who was also a student of L-J, on 'Optical Rotation'. Boys was appointed in 1947 to a University Lectureship in the Department, where he remained until his death in 1972. Boys was a pioneer in recognizing the importance of computation in theoretical chemistry. After the war, J A Pople (FRS, Nobel Laureate 1998) was a student of L-J, completing his thesis in 1950. Pople became a University Lecturer in the Mathematics Department. Other students included G G Hall, A C Hurley and J S Griffith.

Introduction
W hile there were several papers detailing the use of computers in chemistry during the 1960s and 1970s, the first companies organized to address the new areas of chemical databases and molecular modeling were Molecular Design, Ltd. (1978) and Tripos Associates, Inc. (1979) respectively. As the chart below demonstrates, the market grew and evolved continuously since this period and currently is comprised of approximately 20 companies ( A horizontal scrolling history and a vertical scrolling history also are available). There have been several individuals who have contributed to this history and who have corrected some of my mistakes. The author especially wishes to acknowledge Bruce Gelin and Phil Westmoreland for their contributions. If you have logos for any of the companies listed, especially those that were used in the company's early history, I would appreciate hearing from you!
