Robert H. Lawrence, Jr.
United States Air Force Major Robert H. Lawrence, Jr., was the first African American chosen by NASA to be an astronaut. He was born in Chicago on 2 October 1935 and graduated from Englewood High School at age 16. He earned a Bachelor's degree in chemistry from Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois, in 1956, serving as Cadet Commander of the Bradley Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps while in school. Upon graduation he accepted a commission as Second Lieutenant in the USAF Reserve and began flight training with the Air Force. He became an Air Force aviator at the age of 21 upon completion of his training. Lawrence completed a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at The Ohio State University in August 1965. His doctoral dissertation concerned the chemical conversion of tritium rays to methane gas. He was soon assigned as a research scientist at the Air Force Weapons Laboratory at Kirkland AFB, New Mexico. Lawrence was a senior USAF pilot, accumulating well over 2,500 flight hours2,000 of which was in jets. Major Lawrence flew many tests in the Lockheed F-104

    SIR HUMPHRY DAVY
    Early Life
Davy was born on December 17, 1778 in Penzance, Cornwall, England. He received his education in Penzance and in Truro. His father died in 1794, and Davy, in an effort to help support his family, became an apprentice to a surgeon-apothecary, J. Binghan Borlase. After reading Antoine Lavoisier's Traite Elementaire , Davy in 1797 became interested in chemistry.
    The Oxides of Nitrogen
When Davy was released from his indenture as a apprentice, he became superintendent of the Medical Pneumatic Institution of Bristol. This organization was devoted to the study of the medical value of various gases, and it was here that Davy first made his reputation. He studied the oxides of nitrogen and discovered the physiological effects of nitrous oxide, which became known as laughing gas. He "breathed 16 quarts of the gas in seven minutes" and became "completely intoxicated" with it. It would be forty-five years later before nitrous oxide would be used as a anesthetic by dentists. From a notebook that he kept at this time are analytical results that document the discovery of nitrous oxide and that illustrate the law of multiple proportions: "When two elements combine and form more than one compound, the masses of one element that react with a fixed mass of the other are in the ratio of small whole numbers."

A BRIEF HISTORY OF SOIL CHEMISTRY by L. S. Sonon, M. A. Chappell and V.P. Evangelou (deceased) IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY AGRONOMY DEPARTMENT AMES, IA In the Beginning Ion Exchange Soil Mineralogy and Ion Fixation Soil Acidity and Alkalinity ... Future Challenges In the Beginning The emergence of the discipline we call "Soil Chemistry" began with the early observations by experimenters concerning the ability of soils to modify solutions. In 1819, the Italian chemist, Gazzeri, observed that liquid manure, once passed over clay particles became discolored without losing its soluble substances. In similar work, Huxtable noticed in 1848 that soils alsoserved to deodorize liquid manure. The study of soils as a chemical entity formerly began with J. Thomas Way. Way became familiar with the work of H.S. Thompson, who reported in 1845 that when he leached a soil column with ammonium sulfate, to his surprise, calcium sulfate ran out the other end. Experimenting with different soils, pipe clays, and some "home-made" alumino-silicates, Way demonstrated that soils could retain cations such as NH , K , and Na , in exchange for equivalent amounts of Ca ions. With time, Way managed to refine (and in some cases correct) his initial conclusions about soils behaving as cation exchangers, thus earning him the title, the "Father of Soil Chemistry.
