Graduate Programs
The graduate programs in the Department of Chemistry enable properly qualified students to increase their knowledge of, and competence in, the field of chemistry. The Doctor of Philosophy degree is earned by those intent on demonstrating their competence to carry out independent research in chemistry and includes course work, seminar presentations, and research that leads to a defendable thesis and published work. The Master of Science degree is evidence of increased knowledge and competence in chemistry and may include research. Descriptions of these programs may be obtained by viewing them elsewhere on the Chemistry Department Home Page , by completing and submitting an information request , or by writing to:

Welcome to Warwick Chemistry
[c]
A message from the Chair, Professor P J Derrick:
Graded 5 in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, the Chemistry Department is centrally located in purpose-built, refurbished laboratories housing state-of-the-art equipment for synthesis, analysis, NMR and mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, electrochemistry, laser spectroscopy and computation. These facilities provide an ideal environment for both undergraduate study and postgraduate research. With an intake of around 90 undergraduate students each year, the Department provides a high quality learning environment structured around innovative degree courses where students can explore current advances in Chemistry while developing their practical skills. Visiting lecturers from academia and from industry provide direct input to the courses and all students can undertake a piece of original research. Our Chemistry graduates pursue varied careers spanning postgraduate research, the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, and many other professions.

Related Category: Chemistry, General periodic table, chart of the elements arranged according to the periodic law discovered by Dmitri I. Mendeleev and revised by Henry G. J. Moseley . In the periodic table the elements are arranged in columns and rows according to increasing atomic number (see the table entitled Periodic Table ). The vertical columns, or groups, are numbered from I to VIII, with a final column numbered 0. Each group is divided into two categories, or families: one called the a series (the representative, or main group, elements); the other the b series (the transition, or subgroup, elements). All the elements in a group have the same number of valence electrons and hence similar chemical properties. The horizontal rows of the table are called periods. The elements of a period are characterized by the fact that they have the same number of electron shells; the number of electrons in these shells, which equals the element's atomic number, increases from left to right within each period. In each period the lighter metals appear on the left, the heavier metals in the center, and the nonmetals on the right. Elements on the borderline between metals and nonmetals are called metalloids. Group Ia (with one valence electron) and group IIa (with two valence electrons) are called the

The general themeof this second workshop on Algebraic Graph Theory is the geometric representation of graphs and on this occasion the chosen area of application is discrete mathematical chemistry. The workshop provides an opportunity for the scattered communities of algebraic graph theorists and mathematical chemists to discuss recent developments of mutual interest.
The main topics are seen as
  • the new fullerenes eigenspace techniques generalizations from distance-regular graphs topological considerations
In addition to formally timetabled lectures, there will be ample time for more informal discussion. Most days will begin and end with a lecture from a key speaker, with contributed short papers (20-25 minutes) timetabled in between (using two parallel sessions if necessary to avoid saturation).
The meeting is supported by

Barbush Office: Mulvane 60 Phone: 594-8310 e-mail: michael.barbush@bakeru.edu Web Address: http://www.bakeru.edu/faculty/barbush/ Office Hours: MWF 10:00-10:50 AM, MW 1:30-2:30 PM Many other times by appointment TEXT: Stoker, H. Stephen, Introduction to Chemical Principles, Seventh Edition, Prentice-Hall, Inc.: Upper Saddle River, NJ; 2002. A calculator will likely be needed and may be used during tests. One that can use scientific notation is best; one that also can calculate logarithms is even better. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an examination of the structure and nature of atoms; chemical reactions and stoichiometry; gases; water and solutions; acids, bases, and salts; oxidation and reduction; and nuclear chemistry. REQUIREMENTS: Class attendance is required. There will be NO make-up tests or quizzes. If you know in advance that you must miss a test, notify the instructor as soon as possible to arrange to take the test in advance. GRADING: The course grade will be determined primarily by four one-hour tests (400 points), one twenty-five minute quiz (50 points), and a comprehensive final examination (200 points). HINTS: It is often very helpful to work as many of the problems in the text as possible to gain a thorough understanding of the subject. It is often best (and more enjoyable) to work and discuss the problems with other people.
