Chemistry Everywhere (Grades K-12)
October 18 Chemistry out of this world and in this world! The top picture shows insulin crystals grown in experiments done on the space shuttle. The crystals are larger and more ordered than insulin crystals grown on Earth. Their large size makes it easier for researchers to learn about insulin. After studying the "space" crystals, researchers at the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute in Buffalo, New York, were able to make diagrams of the insulin molecules, shown in the bottom picture. Their work will help lead to better medicines for people who have diabetes. This is National Chemistry Week. Sponsored by the American Chemical Society (ACS), National Chemistry Week is designated as a time to remember and honor the people who have advanced our understanding of chemistry and to recognize the products in our lives that have resulted from their work. Whether it's the gasoline we use in our cars, the fabric of our clothing, or the fertilizer used to grow our foods, chemistry is an integral part of almost everything we have or do.

The CONDOR chemical equilibrium code is a robust and versatile code that has been used successfully for modeling chemistry in the solar nebula (Lodders and Fegley 1993; Lauretta and Lodders 1997), in the atmospheres and circumstellar envelopes of cool stars (Lodders and Fegley 1995, 1997a,b, 1999), in the atmosphere of Venus (Fegley et al . 1997), in volcanic gases on Jupiter's satellite Io (Zolotov and Fegley 1998a,b), and in the atmospheres of gas giant planets and brown dwarfs (Fegley and Lodders 1994, 1996; Lodders 1999a; Lodders and Fegley 1994). This web page gives a description of how the CONDOR code operates. The web pages under this one provide extensive comparisons of CONDOR code results with the results of other chemical equilibrium codes and with observed compositions of natural and man-made systems that have reached or closely approach chemical equilibrium. These comparisons demonstrate the versatility of the CONDOR code, which can be applied to a wide range of problems in many areas of science and technology.
Computational Algorithm
The CONDOR code operates by simultaneously considering the dual constraints of mass balance and chemical equilibrium. The operation of the code is best illustrated with an example based on a simplified version of nitrogen thermochemistry in a hydrogen-rich system (e.g., the atmospheres of the gas giant planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune and the atmospheres of brown dwarfs such as Gliese 229B).

DNA conformational transitions
Visualization of the conformational transition of a 200 bp naturally closed circular DNA molecule from the circular form to the figure-8 form. The transition pathway is deduced by combining the lowest frequency bending normal mode of a torsionally stressed duplex about its minimum energy configuration and the corresponding mode of the same DNA with respect to the minimum energy figure-8 state. Type 1 Superconductors
And a Periodic Chart Comparison
The Type 1 category of superconductors is mainly comprised of metals and metalloids that show some conductivity at room temperature. They require incredible cold to slow down molecular vibrations sufficiently to facilitate unimpeded electron flow in accordance with what is known as BCS theory. BCS theory suggests that electrons team up in "Cooper pairs" in order to help each other overcome molecular obstacles - much like race cars on a track drafting each other in order to go faster. Scientists call this process phonon-mediated coupling because of the sound packets generated by the flexing of the crystal lattice Type 1 superconductors - characterized as the "soft" superconductors - were discovered first and require the coldest temperatures to become superconductive. They exhibit a very sharp transition to a superconducting state (see above graph) and "perfect" diamagnetism - the ability to repel a magnetic field completely. Below is a list of known Type 1 superconductors along with the critical transition temperature (known as Tc) below which each superconducts. The 3rd column gives the

Pure and Applied Chemistry
Vol. 76, No. 10, pp. 1921-1925 (2004) This report describes the principles underlying a comprehensive electronic database that contains data essential for calculation of analytical results from neutron-activation analysis (NAA). The database is available through IUPAC. The method used is a comparator method called the k method, where k is a dimensionless factor that is experimentally measured with high accuracy for more than 130 isotopes and that makes use of the gamma spectroscopic line for an analyte isotope relative to a gold comparator. The database contains recommended values for k and other relevant nuclear data.

He received an NSF postdoctoral fellowship to the Institute de Physique du Globe at the University of Paris (1985-86) to study Pb isotope systematics in granites. He came to the University of Washington in 1986. Nelson directs the Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory The Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory is built around two clean chemistry laboratories (one dedicated to Pb isotope studies) and a seven-collector VG Sector mass spectrometer. Routine capabilities include Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic analyses, U-Pb (zircon) geochronology, trace metal (U, V) analyses of foraminifera, and high-precision Sr/Ca analyses of corals. We have recently installed a Nu Instrunments multi-collector ICP-MS in the new Ocean Sciences Research Building, along with the new clean chemistry labs. This has greatly extended our analytical capabilities which in the near future will include analyses of Hf, U-series, high-precision Pb, and metal isotopes such as Cu, Zn and Mo.
