The number of chemistry-related World-Wide Web sites has grown from a few hundred since our introductory review in 1995 to around 3600 by early 1998. Much of the chemical content of these sites has been expressed using Hypertext-markup language (HTML), incorporating hyperlinks in the form of the now familiar URL (Uniform Resource Locator) to create associations with other documents and sites, and to reference visual content such as two-dimensional images, diagrams and schemes. Since 1994 however, a number of novel technologies have been introduced to the Web which go beyond the use of simple images. Here we will focus on one such method termed Virtual Reality Modelling Language or VRML, which has been applied in a number of chemically interesting ways.
The limitations of Images
The Importance of Models
We believe that a superior approach lies in defining multi-dimensional models wherever practicable, rather than in creating static 2D illustrations. Such models could if needed have attributes of time-dependence (

  • Purpose
To graph and analyse data using a spreadsheet. Guidelines (heuristics) for creating a good graph are reviewed.
    Overview
    • Enter and format data in an Excel spreadsheet in a form appropriate for graphing Create a scatter plot from spreadsheet data Insert a linear regression line (trendline) into the scatter plot Use the slope/intercept formula for the regression line to calculate a x value for a known y value Explore curve fitting to scatterplot data Create a connected point (line) graph Place a reference line in a graph

5.03 Produce computer based data visualization projects
    Tools
Excel: This tutorial was written specifically for Excel. The tutorial could be adapted for other spreadsheet packages.
    Teacher Information
This exercise is primarily designed to give students basic skills in creating scatter plots in Excel, and then adding either a regression line or fitted curve to the data points. These techniques are very good for labs in fields like chemistry and physics where the data collected by the students needs to be interpreted in relation to some theoretical model. For example, does the slope of the regression line, fitted to the collected data, match the theoretical slope calculated from the equation? In addition to these basic skills, some principles of good graph design are demonstrated with the somewhat modest graph formatting options allowed in Excel.

Wine/Enology - Grape Chemistry Group Overview
The Wine/Enology - Grape Chemistry Group, part of the Department of Food Science and Technology at Virginia Tech, exists primarily to support the growing grape and wine industry in Virginia. This goal is accomplished through teaching, extension and research in three general areas. The first is grape quality, the most important parameter governing wine quality; it is especially important in Virginia, where wet seasons may induce rot and rapid growth. Climate and fungal disease can cause inadequate fruit maturity, resulting in wines of reduced varietal complexity and thus reduced value. Technical studies are another important area of work. Far from the romantic image it portrays, commercial winemaking is a highly technical business, involving analytical chemistry, microbiology, sanitation, and process engineering. To compete with other wine regions, the Virginia industry must have trained and active winery employees. Technological advancements are enhanced through an extensive short-course program, extension publications, a bi-monthly newsletter and on-site visitations. The Enology-Grape Chemistry Group is also involved in training prospective industry members through undergraduate and graduate programs and an active internship program.

New studies shed light on stroke prevention and management
Coinciding with the National Stroke Week in Australia (19 - 25 September 2005) is the release of results from two recent stroke studies from the George Institute for International Health that investigate both the causative factors as well as a little studied outcome of stroke, that of depression. The studies are part of a larger project to determine the impact of prevention strategies and improvements in stroke healthcare.
    No risk, no fun?
Tall people are more prepared to take risks than small people, women are more careful than men, and the willingness to take risks markedly decreases with age: These are the findings arrived at by researchers from the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA), the University of Bonn and the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) in Berlin.

    Nonbonding Forces Summary
Recall the first part of this course is all about the forces between molecules that are induced by the way in which the electrons distribute themselves around nuclei. In some cases the electrons are shared between nuclei and they induce powerful chemical bonding forces that join nuclei into molecules. But even when the electrons don't cause an actual chemical bond to form, they still induce nonbonding forces that cause atoms or molecules to influence each other. They may orient with respect to each other, like carbon monoxide molecules do when near each other, or they may simply cause attractions that make it harder to disperse the molecules apart (boil a liquid, say). Here's a table outlining the nonbonding forces we have studied. In each case `` E'' stands for a rough estimate of the total amount of energy released (that is, the decrease in the energy of the system) when the objects in question (ions, dipoles, whatever) come from very far away from each other to close by. You should keep in mind when considering these figures that an ordinary covalent chemical bond has a bond energy of about 400 kJ/mol. force acts between: E consequences ion-ion ions only 1000 kJ/mol ionic crystals ion-dipole 100 kJ/mol solvation shells
dissolution dipole-dipole dipoles only 3 kJ/mol polar liquids boil at higher temps than nonpolar London anything 1 kJ/mol (for < 6 light atom molecules; can be more for big molecules, big atoms)
