The Molecular Biosciences Program
Current research probing the molecular details of the biological sciences requires simultaneous application of genetic, biochemical, and molecular biological principles and expertise. The Molecular Biosciences Program (MBP) provides training opportunities in this area. Research Facilities The Department of Biological Sciences, housed in the modern Galvin Life Sciences complex, has excellent facilities for all laboratory research in molecular biology. Facilities and training opportunities are available in genetics, molecular and cell biology, and developmental biology. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has training opportunities in the fields of in gene expression, protein structure and enzyme kinetics. Degree Requirements All MBP students must pass both oral and written comprehensive examinations. Students will conduct original research and write an approved dissertation on this work. The work is conducted under the direction of an advisor participating in the MBP. Students in the program also must complete a one-year teaching requirement that usually involves assisting in the instruction of laboratory courses within their discipline. All students participate in the seminar activities of the program.

Program of Study The Department of Chemistry, in conjunction with the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BchMB) in the Division of Biological Sciences, offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Chemistry. The program is designed to prepare students to enter a variety of interdisciplinary fields in biochemical and biophysical sciences. Undergraduate research is strongly encouraged. By combining the resources of both departments, the students in this program are given the opportunity to study chemistry and physics of macromolecules, mechanisms of actions of enzymes and hormones, molecular and cellular biology, biotechnology, and other related fields. Students who are interested in this program should consult Viresh Rawal (702-2194) and/or Herbert Friedmann (702-6902) for advice and details. Summary of Requirements General

Department History
The 1970s were a time of particular transition for the department's faculty. Dr. Olcott left, Dr. Vaughn died, and both Dr. Moose and Mr. Emigh retired. Dr. Robert Mortimer and Dr. David Jeter both became associated with the department as did Dr. Harlie Parish, whose position was that of a research associate, Mr. Steve Glover, the storeroom supervisor, and Ms. Anne McAuley, the departmental secretary. Grants from NSF and the Research Corporation continued to flow into the department along with new instrumentation, and new courses were offered in both organic chemistry and physical chemistry. In 1984, the name of the college was changed to Rhodes College after many years as Southwestern at Memphis and a succession of events moved the department ahead in a substantial way. In the same year, Ms. Evelena Grant became the department's secretary. In response to changes in student interest, the Chemical Biology major was replaced in 1985 by a biochemistry track wholly within the department. A second course in biochemistry was added, and Dr. Lyons was able to direct his entire attention into this area since Dr. Kevin Ogle was hired as the department's analytical chemist. With a successful request to the NSF, Dr. Ogle was able to move the department into the era of Fourier transform instrumentation with the acquisition of an FTIR in 1988. In 1989 both Dr. Lyons and Dr. Gilliom retired from the faculty. Mr. Jeff Goode joined the department as storeroom supervisor in 1989 upon the departure of Mr. Glover.

About the Department
Mission Statement
The Chemistry Department at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry is unique in that it is organized around the interdisciplinary areas of Biochemistry and Natural Products Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry and Polymer Chemistry. It stresses a strong foundation in the traditional areas of Chemistry (Analytical, Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry) plus integration of these areas into its specialties. Thus, students at all levels enjoy the advantages of a traditional Chemistry program and the added value of a specialty aligned with the needs of the 21st Century. The Department is also committed to maintaining its leading role in extending the state of knowledge in its specialties. In keeping with this, it occupied its new home, the 71,000 square foot Edwin C. Jahn Laboratory
