Graham Bushnell-Wye In the months leading up to Christmas staff were engaged in a high level of user support in a concerted effort to squeeze out the maximum amount of data before what we expect to be the last long SRS shutdown that will involve venting the machine's vacuum vessel. There was also a great deal of behind the scenes activity to keep beamlines and stations operational, such as the ongoing work to establish special operating conditions and safety interlocks to ensure Beamline 9 could operate as routinely as possible after the main port 9 absorber failed. We struggled to cope with a difficult financial situation and ended up moving electronics, controls, monochromator crystals, detectors etc. between stations to maintain operations. There was increased pressure due to staff losses and absences, with some notable hotspots. This has been partially addressed (see below) and will continue to be reviewed in the year ahead. It's always difficult to accommodate change, and the reorganisation of the SR department meant rebuilding teams and focusing on new priorities. My thanks go to the scientific and technical staff in and associated with the College in being so flexible and willing to make things change for the better, and I'm confident our users will want to do the same. I believe we've had a very productive period and are emerging from this stronger and better placed to deal with difficulties which may lie ahead.

The Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University is small with course offerings in the traditional areas of research. Faculty have active, funded programs that stretch this traditional structure to cover an exciting array of interdisciplinary research areas including the synthesis and characterization of novel materials, nanostructures and clusters, forensic science, environmental science and the university-wide initiative in the life sciences. Active collaborations between research groups in this department and the Massey Cancer Center, basic health science departments at the VCU Medical Center, the School of Engineering, the School of Pharmacy, and the Center for Environmental Studies enrich the research opportunities of our graduate students. The faculty and students of this department provide a diverse cultural, racial and ethnic mix that enhances the inclusive climate of this department. Combined with the low student-to-faculty ratio, this department provides an excellent environment in which students can pursue their research interests and build a foundation for future independent careers. As you take a look at this department, we hope that you will be drawn to consider us more closely for your undergraduate and graduate education in chemistry. We are excited about the growing research opportunities being pursued by our faculty and hope that you can visit us to personally to see if this is where you want to be.

The Department of Chemistry:
Research, Facilities, Faculty, and Students About the Department of Chemistry Click HERE to see a brief list of our instrumentation. The Department of Chemistry offers an exciting environment for research work in modern chemistry. A number of recent faculty hires and instrument acquisitions are certain to enhance research funding and productivity to higher levels. The faculty has an unusual focus of excellence in the area of supramolecular chemistry, one of the most innovative, current and vigorous fields of modern chemical research. While other departments in the country have focused on synthetic aspects of supramolecular chemistry, our department has gained an international reputation as a research center for physical supramolecular chemistry. Therefore, the department has recently established a Center for Supramolecular Science with the main goal of developing multidisciplinary areas of frontier research in chemistry. The Center fosters collaborative projects with other departments, including those in our School of Medicine as well as the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. The Department also houses a University-wide Center for Advanced Microscopy with state-of-the-art instruments for environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). A new Bruker S-ray diffractometer with area detector has just been added to the department's three NMR spectrometers (500, 400 and 300 MHz), three FT-IR's, an upgraded Bruker 200D EPR, and Maldi-TOF and FAB mass spectrometers as the main instruments for structural elucidation.

Office The major in chemistry was instituted at Morehouse College in 1916 when Professor Burwell T. Harvey, B.S., Colgate University, M.S., Columbia University, became the Chairman of the Department. From that time until 1957, there was one graduate from this department to obtain the Ph.D. degree in chemistry. K.A. Huggins (1923) obtained the Ph.D. Degree in organic chemistry from the University of Chicago in 1937. The first chemistry graduate during the 50's to obtain this degree did so in 1957 when Dolphus Milligan earned the Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley. From 1957 to 1981, there were 45 graduates from this department to earn the Ph.D. During this period approximately half this number of chemistry graduates obtained MD degrees. Dr. Henry C. McBay served as Chairman during this extraordinary and productive period. Dr. McBay as immediate successor, C. Arrington, was one of the 45. Since 1983, the chair of the department of chemistry has been another one of Dr. McBay's students, Troy Story, who like Milligan earned the Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley. The department was placed on the list of pre-approved departments by the Committee on Professional Training of the American Chemical Society in 1972.

Updated Aug. 31, 2005.
Marietta College is an independent, selective, coeducational, residential, liberal arts college of 1,300 students located in the historic river city of Marietta, Ohio. The city of 15,000 is part of a larger metro area of 150,000 located about two hours from Columbus and Pittsburgh.
Marietta was founded in 1788, the first organized settlement of the Northwest Territory. The College traces its roots to 1797, was formally chartered in 1835, and was awarded a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa in 1860, only the 16th institution in the nation then so honored. Today, Marietta College is recognized annually by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top regional liberal arts colleges in the Midwest, while the community is regularly cited for its high quality of life and reasonable cost of living.
Marietta College is an equal opportunity educator and employer that values diversity. Women, minorities, and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Job Listings Career Resources Many North Carolina colleges and universities offer coursework related to biotechnology. If you are interested in a career in biotechnology, an undergraduate degree in biology or chemistry is a good starting place. There are also more specialized degrees or areas of concentration within degrees. In general, the most important foundational basic sciences for modern biotechnology are microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, molecular biology, and cell biology. These disciplines may be organized in different ways in different colleges and universities. Graduates interested in pursuing biotechnology careers should also have a solid grounding in chemistry, mathematics, computer science, and technical writing and oral presentation skills. There are many other areas of applied science and engineering - chemical and biochemical engineering, for example - that can provide relevant education and training for biotechnology.
