In addition to the acquisition of a basic knowledge of science, students will develop skills in critical thinking, laboratory techniques, interpretation of observations, and clear expression of ideas. Undergraduate research is an integral part of the educational program. A major in biological chemistry is designed to provide a fundamental core of chemistry courses and a background in modern biology. This major is appropriate for planning a career in the biochemical or pharmaceutical industry and planning continued studies in medicine, dentistry, biochemistry, pharmacology, and related fields. The major in chemistry and mathematics is designed as a dual major with the primary interest in chemistry. Students whose primary interest is in mathematics may elect this major through the Mathematics and Computer Science Department.

  • Will the Universe expand forever? Is there life on other planets? How are stars formed? These are some of the questions being addressed by students majoring in Astronomy. Some areas of study in astronomy include the sun, the solar system, the stars, the Milky Way, galaxies, and cosmology. SDSU is the only institution in the California State University System that offers a complete academic program in astronomy. Students participate in all phases of observational astronomical research. Much of this work is done at the Mount Laguna Observatory, operated by the University.
Department of Biology
  • The Department of Biology offers a dynamic an modern program in biology which prepares students both academically and practically for vocations in science and science-related fields, or for entry into graduate studies. The major is designed to present a basic background in modern biology and in the supportive disciplines of chemistry, mathematics, and physics, and to provide specialized training selected by the student from a variety of areas.

The Department of Chemistry at Ithaca College offers diverse coursework, opportunities for significant research, challenging and rewarding fieldwork, and a variety of extramural activities. The department is housed in the Center for Natural Sciences, a 125,000-square-foot building that features private labs for professors, large labs for instruction, and up-to-the-minute equipment. In fact, from their very first year here, our students work closely with professors in the lab. They may even present their research findings at national conferences and coauthor papers for professional journals. The chemistry curriculum is approved by the American Chemical Society and provides an exceptionally strong foundation for a wide range of career opportunities or further training at the graduate level. Our graduates have found work in such fields as medicine, dentistry, education, and forensic science. They've gone on to prominent graduate schools, including UC Berkeley, Penn State, Stanford, UC San Diego, the University of Wisconsin, and Yale. The department supports a host of interdisciplinary programs and initiatives geared toward the academic and professional development of students. These include a biochemistry program offered in conjunction with the biology department; a 3-2 engineering program administered jointly by Ithaca, Clarkson, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; and preparation for teaching at the secondary school level.

The chemistry department emphasizes practical, hands-on experience. Students learn early on how to conduct laboratory experiments. Chemistry majors gain confidence and competence with sophisticated equipment, expertise that can be applied in professional school, graduate school, and the workforce. Students have a high level of responsibility. Advanced students assist beginners; teaching assistants calibrate instruments lead introductory lab classes, and tutor classmates. A major in biochemistry is available for students interested in combining chemistry and biology curriculum. Students can pursue a B.A. or B.S. with a major in chemistry or biochemistry. Chemistry is available as a minor. Majors: Chemistry, Biochemistry
