Graduate Program in Medicinal Chemistry
Research activities in Medicinal Chemistry are focused on studying the molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis. Theses programs include: (a) understanding the bioactivation and detoxification of procarcinogens; and (b) understanding the molecular and structural basis of how carcinogen-DNA adducts induce mutation and affect DNA replication, ultimately leading to cancer. Currently Drs. Cho and King offer research opportunities for students who are pursuing a M.S. or Ph.D. in the Medicinal Chemistry program of the Department of Biomedical Sciences. M.S. Requirements
  • ACS Placement Exam (organic) to determine specific program requirements. One seminar presentation per year Thesis defense Demonstrated proficiency in physical chemistry or successful completion of BCH 435

    Welcome
The Department of Medicinal Chemistry is located in the College of Pharmacy, and is an integral part of the University of Florida's Health Science Center. Medicinal Chemistry is a unique blend of the physical and biological sciences. The scope of the field is sufficiently broad to give students with many different science backgrounds a rewarding and challenging program of study. Areas of active interest include natural products chemistry, drug delivery systems, organic synthesis of medicinal agents, drug metabolism and molecular toxicology. The department has excellent facilities for research in the major areas of Medicinal Chemistry and faculty have been highly successful in attracting extramural research support for the past several years. The Department faculty members are involved in teaching, research and service.

The strong technology focus of our programs will give you an advantage in the job market after graduation.
    High-tech facilities
Our science labs have subject-specific equipment, computers, and software that is up to date with industry standards.
Summer Undergraduate Research This summer, we have come together to form a community of researchers within the College of Science. We work on questions in biology, chemistry, imaging sciences, mathematics, medical sciences, and physics. We are scientists working on real projects. We talk about our research at weekly, interdisciplinary seminars. We voice our opinions at weekly discussion groups on topics that we find interesting. We play soccer, go rock climbing and watch movies together. We are forming bonds with our faculty mentors, and we are making new friends within the College of Science. Robert Marande, Dean The College of Science and Technology includes curricula in six departments with a number of programs and options in physical and life sciences, mathematics and technology. The college was organized in 2001 through the division of the former college of arts and sciences; a number of other programs became part of the College of Liberal Arts. All students must complete the general education requirements described in the general education requirements section. Each student selects a major and fulfills the major requirements as stated at the beginning of the course descriptions for each of the academic programs. Several programs have more than one option for fulfilling the major requirements. For example, the allied health programs in medical imaging and medical technology include substantial clinical involvement. In addition to achieving an in-depth understanding of an academic discipline by completing the requirements of a major, students may gain knowledge in a second area by completing the minor requirements of another discipline. Each academic minor consists of a minimum of 18 semester hours of courses. The following disciplines offer academic minors: biology, chemistry, computer science, geography, mathematics, and physics. Progress on the addition to Hartline Science Center recently took a big step forward when first and second floor walls were installed.

Welcome to the Smith College Department of Chemistry. We are located in Sabin-Reed Hall, overlooking both the botanical gardens and Paradise Pond. The department offers both a major and a minor in chemistry, and majors may choose their curriculum to receive ACS certification. Members of the department teach a wide variety of introductory and advanced courses, and faculty often work with students on independent research projects. Faculty research interests cover several areas of chemistry, including inorganic, physical, organic, biochemistry, and computational chemistry. We are well-equipped with modern instrumentation for both research and teaching laboratories. For an in-depth look at the department, follow the links in the menu, or visit us in Sabin-Reed.
