Professor Oncodevelopmental Biology mdawson@burnham.org 858.646.3100 x3165 (phone) 858.646.3192 (fax) RESEARCH FOCUS, BIOGRAPHY, STAFF, PUBLICATIONS Research Focus [11]. Cells then undergo the intrinsic form of apoptosis, which involves the release of cytochrome c and caspase activation. Recently, the Zhang group found that in some cancer cells the expression of the transcription factor TR3 (nur77/NGFI-B) is induced. TR3 then exits the nucleus to interact with mitochondrial membrane-bound Bcl-2 [12]. The interaction between TR3 and Bcl-2 transforms the latter from a cytoprotective protein to one that fosters apoptosis. To facilitate these mechanistic studies we have designed and synthesized the tritiated analog of the parent compound [7], an antagonist that prevents apoptosis [13], and other analogs that are only capable of inducing cell-cycle arrest. Biography Marcia Dawson earned her Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1968. She received postdoctoral training at California Institute of Technology, Harvard University, and Stanford Research Institute where she was appointed to staff and served in a progressive series of appointments culminating in Director of Drug Discovery, Bio-Organic Chemistry Lab, 1994–1999. She continued as Head of the Medicinal Medical Chemistry Department of the Molecular Medicine Research Institute, 1999–2000. Dr. Dawson was recruited to The Burnham Institute in 2001.

Postdoctoral Position Available
A one-year postdoctoral research associate position is available immediately to study pattern formation in chemical systems with nonstandard diffusive transport. The candidate will be involved in theoretical and numerical studies of the spatiotemporal dynamics of systems where Brownian motion is not an adequate model for transport. The research will focus on two types of nonstandard transport, anomalous diffusion and transport with inertia. The ideal candidate should have a recent PhD in a relevant discipline with a strong mathematical or computational background. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in one of the following areas: persistent random walks or continuous-time random walks, fractional diffusion equations, reaction-transport equations. Experience with Mathematica and programming skills are expected.
Please send via email (files in PDF format only) or by postal mail a letter of application describing your background and a CV with a list of publications and arrange to have two letters of recommendation sent to Prof. W. Horsthemke, Department of Chemistry, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX 75275-0314

Biography
Shende Jiang
was born in 1963 in the rural area of Shandong peninsula (P. R. China). He studied chemistry (B.Sc. in 1983) at Liaocheng Normal College (formerly Shandong Normal College Liaocheng Branch and now Liaocheng University ) and medicinal chemistry (M.Sc. in 1986) under the supervision of Prof. Huicai Wang at Shandong Medical University (now part of Shandong University ). From 1986 to 1988 he was a lecturer of organic chemistry in the chemistry department of Shandong Normal University . There he worked with the late Prof. Mingli Shi on the synthesis and development of amphoteric surfactants and other fine organic intermediates for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry in China. During that two years they had developed the best selling antibacterial agent Ansuojunkang in China. Ansuojunkang ( Junduqing ) has been massively manufactured in China since 1990 by a number of companies with production of more than 7000 tons each year.
