Roll Call of Honor, Sunday, 25 May 2003 Senator Daniel K. Inouye Senator Daniel K. Inouye was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on September 7, 1924, and was named after a Methodist minister who had adopted his mother. Young Dan Inouye attended Honolulu public schools and earned pocket money by parking cars at the old Honolulu Stadium and giving haircuts to fellow students. Most of his earnings were spent on a flock of homing pigeons, a postage stamp collection, parts for crystal radio sets and chemistry sets. On December 7, 1941, the fateful day of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, 17-year-old Dan Inouye was one of the first Americans to handle civilian casualties in the Pacific war. He had taken medical aid training and was pressed into service as head of a first-aid litter team. He saw a "lot of blood" and did not go home for a week. In March 1943, 18-year-old Dan Inouye, then a freshman in pre-medical studies at the University of Hawaii, enlisted in the U.S. Army's 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the famed "Go For Broke" regiment. Inouye was soon promoted to the rank of Sergeant and was designated as a combat platoon leader during the Italian campaign. He slogged through nearly three bloody months of the Rome Arno campaign with the U.S. Fifth Army.

The Federation of European Chemical Societies initiated, as a Millennium Project, the celebration of Distinguished European Chemists spanning a period of over two hundred years. Member societies and individuals were invited to submit their nominations of distinguished European chemists from the end of the 18th century until the present day. In addition to Nobel Prize winners, there were nominations of many others from Europe who have, over more than two centuries, transformed the science and influenced science, industry or society worldwide.

Leopold Gmelin German physiological chemist, born August 2, 1788, Göttingen; died April 13, 1853, Heidelberg. Associated eponyms: Gmelin's test Simple, qualitative method for demonstrating bilirubin in urine. Rosenbach's test A test for bile in the urine using nitric acid. Biography: Leopold Gmelin was born in Heidelberg into a famous family of physicians and naturalists, descending from the Tübingen pharmacist Johann Georg Gmelin (1674-1728). His father was the physician and philosopher Johann Friedrich Gmelin (1748-1804). Gmelin obtained his doctorate in 1812 in Göttingen, becoming Privatdozent in 1813, extraordinary professor 1814, and full professor of medicine and chemistry in 1817, establishing chemistry as an independent discipline at that university. Of particular importance are his investigations with Friedrich Tiedemann (1781-1861). He resigned from his professorship in 1851 and died two years later. In 1852 he was succeeded by Robert Wilhelm Bunsen (1811-1899).
