Jacqueline K. Barton
Jacqueline K. Barton is the Arthur and Marian Hanisch Memorial Professor of Chemistry at the California Institute of Technology. A role model for women in the sciences, she is particularly interested in biophysical and inorganic chemistry. Her research has yielded new techniques for use in studies of dna by focusing on the dynamics of dna structure and the effects of chemical damage. Professor Barton received a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 1991. She has been elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the National Academy of Sciences. Barnard and Columbia have awarded her their university medals. She has published more than 200 research articles and has trained about 100 graduate students and postdoctoral associates, more than a third of whom are women scientists. She also serves on a number of national advisory committees and boards. She is a director of the Dow Chemical Company and a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Gilead Sciences.

Born in Cambridge, England, the son of a Classics don. After studying chemistry at Trinity College, Cambridge, he became a fellow of the college. During the First World War, he served as a chemist at the Royal Naval Airship Service at Kingsnorth in Kent. As the Royal Society Sorby Research Fellow at the University of Sheffield, Adam extended his studies of surface films. He became a lecturer at University College, London, where he also carried out research on surface-active agents and detergents. He was then called to a Chair at the University of Southampton. Adam was an active Christian Scientist. Paul Gabriel Adam (1856-1916). Born in Avesnes (Nord), near the Belgian border. After taking his doctorate at the Sorbonne, he became a principal sanitary inspector in Paris. He was then made Professor of Chemistry at a veterinary college at Alfort (Seine). Adam was interested in the bromination of organic compounds and the chemistry of biphenyl. He should not be confused with (1860-?), a French civil engineer and professor of mechanics.

Bikson has just completed work on two large-scale US projects: a study of the feasibility and societal implications of universal access to electronic mail (Markle Foundation); and a study designed to facilitate the implementation of research results (Transportation Research Board, NRC). Bikson recently completed work on a National Research Council committee concerned with effects of investment in information technology on the performance of the service sector. She currently serves on the steering committee for the NSF-supporated NRC panel on ordinary citizen interfaces to the internet. She is a member of editorial boards for Organizational Computing, Journal of Computer Mediated Communication, and The Information Society.
