Focusing on the history of the periodic table, this site provides a brief synopsis that is useful for students constructing a timeline. Examples of some of the periodic tables that have been developed are relevant for students of module 8.3.3 Metals in Stage 6 Chemistry. The information is also relevant to outcome 5.7.1 in the Science Years 7-10 syllabus. Information is presented in a straightforward style and there are useful links to comical elements, the development of the periodic table, and study sites. Humour and enthusiasm make this an entertaining site. There is a useful flat version of the periodic table for students to print. B. Sampford

Objectives
Students will
  • discuss the definition of chemistry and the different careers related to chemistry;
  • talk about how people use chemistry every day; and
  • research one chemistry-related career for a class presentation.
Materials
  • Computer with Internet access
  • Poster board, markers, colored pencils, and other materials for student posters
  • Paper and pencil
Procedures
  • After watching the program Forensic Detectives: Chemistry at Work , ask students how they would define chemistry. Help them create a simple definition, such as these: Chemistry is the structure and properties of substances and how they react to one another. Chemistry is about what substances are made of and how they combine.
  • Next, ask students to describe careers that involve chemistry based on what they viewed. Ask students what these careers have in common. (They all deal with substances, their properties, and how they react with each other.)

    "Of interest to general readers and handy for science and women's studies collections. Highly recommended." Choice
    "This impressive sourcebook features biographical profiles of 75 women who made substantive contributions in chemistry and physics. The profiles which include a bibliography of works by and about the individual, are each contributed by a different author and are written so that the science is understandable to the lay reader. Short biographies of the many contributors are included, as are several appendixes providing biographical, chronological, and disciplinary tables of the biographees." Library Journal
    Biographies of women scientists are few in number. This volume fills that gap in the literature. It includes extensive profiles, arranged alphabetically, of 75 women from different countries who have been influential in the development of chemistry and physics. Subjects were chosen on the basis of their advanced degrees, innovative research, influence in teaching, leadership in the profession, and scholarly publications. Each profile includes a biography, a career discussion, and a bibliography of works by and about the subject. Biographies provide personal information with special attention to influences on the subject's career. The career discussions indicate the significance of the subject's contributions in language accessible to the layperson. The work provides a valuable contribution to both women's studies and the history of chemistry and physics and should serve as an inspiration to young women seeking a career in the physical sciences.

    Updated 1 July 2004 This controlled-vocabulary index consists mainly of Chapter and Section entries from the chapters into which SIRCh is arranged. (The SIRCh chapter titles are in boldface type; CHEMINFO main works are listed in bold capital letters.) Additional index terms are used sparingly in this index. Thus, far fewer terms can be searched here compared to the thousands of words found in the full-text indexes on CHEMINFO.
