Agvet chemicals: Responsible agricultural and veterinary chemical use and residue prevention
Why the need for agvet chemicals
Agvet chemicals have an important role in the efficient production of wholesome food and fibre products for an ever-increasing population worldwide. Agvet chemicals are a means of achieving efficient and economic pest and disease control in food and fibre crops and livestock animals and reducing soil erosion. Agvet chemicals include the pesticides we use everyday to control household pests such as mosquitoes, flies, cockroaches and ants and veterinary drugs to control diseases and ailments in livestock and pets. Imagine a world where household pests were able to thrive in huge numbers, or whole crops totally destroyed by fungi, bacteria, locusts or mice, or animals denied access to essential treatment for their diseases or ailments. It has been estimated that food supplies could immediately fall to 30 % due to the ravages of pests and this reinforces the need for adequate control measures to be in place, including using agvet chemicals. Additionally withholding treatment of animals with veterinary chemicals (e.g. blowfly treatments in sheep) may compromise animal welfare. Useful further reading

Safeguards for agvet chemical use
Everyone from farmers, consumers through to government regulators is concerned about residues of agvet chemicals in the food chain and agvet chemicals affecting the environment. These concerns are addressed through the controls that are exercised through the Australian National Registration Scheme (NRS) and agvet chemical control of use legislation existing in each Australian State and Territory aimed at achieving responsible chemical use.

Registration
All agricultural and veterinary (agvet) chemical products sold or supplied in Australia must be assessed and registered by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) as required under the Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals Code Act 1994 before they can be supplied, distributed or sold anywhere in Australia. The registration process includes the approval of a label for the product, setting appropriate conditions for safe and effective use, and the establishment of maximum residue limits (MRLs), if required. Registration provides assurance that chemical products when used as directed are safe and effective and do not have adverse effects on human health, the environment, non-target plants and animals and trade. It also ensures that users have access to approved products that are correctly packaged and labelled with all the necessary handling, storage and disposal instructions. Variations to the formulation of a currently registered product must also be approved, as well as new labels or any proposed new patterns of use and claims.

Agricultural Chemicals and Minority Health Issues
Agricultural Health Study The NIEHS, in partnership with the National Cancer Institute (NCI), has a long-term Agricultural Health Study of farmers and pesticide applicators, as well as their spouses and children, to determine the health consequences of exposures typical in rural environments. The NIEHS was particularly instrumental in ensuring that a large part of this cohort included African-American families. The NIEHS component of this study will focus on non-cancer endpoints, which include reproductive outcomes, childhood development, asthma and other respiratory diseases, immunological effects, neurological symptoms, degenerative retinal disease, and neurological diseases. Pesticide Exposure and Neurologic Function in Farmworkers Pesticide use in the United States has increased greatly in the last 50 years, but the health effects of pesticide exposure are still unclear. NIEHS-funded researchers are planning a cross-sectional study of the neurologic effects of chronic, low-level exposure on exposed farmworkers. The study will be conducted in central Florida, in collaboration with a local grassroots organization. A large number of the participants are Hispanic and the cohort includes both men and women. The results of this study will elucidate the effects of pesticide exposure on neurologic function and also address the health problems of an underserved minority group. The Office of Research on Minority Health (ORMH) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) might also join NIEHS in support of this project.

Agricultural chemicals (pesticides and nitrogen fertilizers) have become an integral Concentration differential for selected agricultural chemicals.
http://ia.water.usgs.gov/nawqa/factsheets/fs-116-97.html
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Geological Survey Bureau (GSB); the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory (UHL); and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) have been working together to address this question. As part of the Iowa Ground Water Monitoring (IGWM) Program, water samples have been collected from selected Iowa municipal wells since 1982. An examination of this data identified two trends: 1) concentrations of atrazine were generally decreasing over time, and 2) concentrations of metolachlor were generally were increasing. Continuing ground-water sampling can determine if these trends represent long-term changes in chemical concentrations.
BACKGROUND
Figure 1. Location of the municipal wells repeatedly sampled from 1982-1995 for the IGWM.
CHANGING CONCENTRATIONS
Figure 2. Concentration differential for selected agricultural chemicals. This concentration differential was calculated by subtracting the median 1987-91 concentration from the 1992-95 concentration for the 89 wells having the longest record of agricultural-chemical data. The nitrate data is in parts-per-million and the herbicide data is in parts-per-billion.

Last updated on July 1, 2004 Sumitomo Chemical has developed a number of plant protection chemicals, ranging from conventional insecticides, fungicides and herbicides to new types of products, including plant growth regulators. These products are marketed in more than 110 countries around the world. We take a comprehensive approach to enhancing agricultural production by providing plant protection chemicals, fertilizers, feed additives, and other products and technologies. We are also developing and marketing household and public hygiene chemicals that are used to improve basic amenities and living environments around the world. Shigehiro Oba

Admiral is an insect growth regulator developed by synthesizing a compound whose molecular structure is similar to that of the natural juvenile hormones found in insects. It is effective against target insect pests such as scales, whiteflies, and thrips. We are also marketing a biological insecticide called Dipol in Japan. Herbicides We market the Sumiherb and Cremart brands of herbicide products in Japan. Sumiherb is widely used in rice paddies in combination with other herbicides. Cremart is used for rice and other crops, such as vegetables and lawns. In overseas markets, we market various other types of herbicides, including Resource (Sumiverde) for soybeans and corn, and Select* and Sumisoya for soybeans.

GOAL - to provide the reader with a framework for:
  • examining the problem of agricultural chemicals in soil designing ecologically sound management strategies for dealing with non-productive soils, pests and diseases.
  • BEHAVIOURAL OBJECTIVES
    - after having read this paper you will be able to understand and accept that:
    • the long-term disbenefits associated with the production and use of agricultural chemicals, particularly pesticides (resource depletion, environmental damage and health consequences), are such that alternative, ecologically sound strategies must be developed and used; in order to make a soil productive and keep it so, it is necessary to cater to the needs of its beneficial biota;
