Engineering is a very large profession. Almost two million people are employed in this country as engineers, and the field will continue to expand as long as there are technical problems to solve. Engineers are problem-solving people who invent new products and make things work better, more efficiently, quicker and less expensively. They turn ideas into reality. Engineers have a variety of career possibilities from which to choose and may specialize in research, consulting, planning, design, manufacturing, construction, management, teaching, writing, or sales. Engineering graduates have excellent prospects for finding employment in private industry, government, military service, or academia. Engineers receive rigorous training in the basic sciences, mathematics, and the engineering disciplines. Students choose to major in chemical, civil, computer, electrical, environmental, or mechanical engineering. While pursuing their undergraduate degrees, students also have opportunities to participate in undergraduate research with the faculty or to gain work experience through engineering internships and cooperative employment with industry. For further information about engineering, contact the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Affairs, College of Engineering, 102 DuPont Hall, 302-831-8659.

Nominations Invited for 2005 Awards of Excellence in Chemical Engineering
Nominations Close 26 May 2005
The Chairman of the Awards Committee of the Australian and New Zealand Federation of Chemical Engineers, Dr Gordon Weiss, is now inviting nominations for the 2005 Awards of Excellence in Chemical Engineering.
The Federation is the joint committee of the leaders of the Institutions that represent chemical engineers in this region. The Institutions are the Institution of Chemical Engineers in Australia, Engineers Australia Chemical College, the Royal Australian Chemical Institute and the Society of Chemical Engineers New Zealand.
He is keen to involve Chemical Engineers at all levels in promoting and recognising the best in the profession. "I would expect members of the profession would often be impressed by the outstanding achievements of their colleagues. Accordingly, I would like to invite them to consider nominating, or encourage others to nominate, Chemical Engineers who would be worthy award recipients. An award is not only important recognition for the recipient but also reflects positively on the organisation they represent and those involved in the nomination. The support of the awards through nominations ensures outstanding contributors to industry and the profession receive the recognition they deserve, and demonstrates the strength of the discipline in Australia and New Zealand" Prince said.

CHEMICAL ENGINEER Chemical engineers work across the manufacturing sector of the industry in many roles. These include:
  • Optimization of processes Development of new products and processes Operation of processes in a safe, efficient and environmentally sustainable manner Reclamation of materials eg detergents, water, condensate Preparation of feasibility studies for new or modified processes.
Sometimes their roles are described as Process Engineers or Process Technologists. SCOPE: Chemical engineers are found in many positions from operation and supervision of processes, design and commissioning of new plant or increasing production efficiencies. They may work with manufacturing companies, research organizations, consultants or equipment supply companies. People wishing to progress to management roles will need to consider further study in business management. COURSES AND TRAINING: To become a Chemical Engineer, you need to complete a degree in Chemical Engineering. Entry to these programs requires completion of year 12 or equivalent in English, Chemistry, Mathematics and/or Physics. The dairy industry has a Graduate Orientation program to assist new engineering graduates entering the industry.

Professor assists chemical engineering department
By Taylour Burton
Summer Reporter After being at Notre Dame for more than 25 years, Dr. Arvind Varma came to Purdue in the fall of 2003. He was hired as department head of the Chemical Engineering Department. He came at what is a "good time to be a Purdue chemical engineer," he said. "(Purdue) is a dynamic place." Varma built up the status of Notre Dame's Chemical Engineering department during his time as department head there. "I think his performance there was precisely why Purdue was excited about having him as a head," said Dr. Doraiswami Ramkrishna, professor of chemical engineering. "He has an eye for quality." He added that Varma is well known in chemical engineering. Since Varma's arrival, nine new faculty have joined the department. Three, including Varma, are members of a prestigious society, the National Academy of Engineering. "We are increasing diversity," said Varma.

chemical engineering Chemical engineering is the application of science mathematics and economics to the process of converting raw materials or chemicals into more useful or valuable forms. Chemical Engineering largely involves the design and maintenance of chemical processes for large-scale manufacture. Chemical engineers in this branch are usually employed under the title of process engineer . Following is an example that illustrates the process engineering part of chemical engineering: The individual processes used by chemical engineers (eg.

Exploring Careers: Chemical Engineering (Grades 7-12)
February 19 Graphic: Ji Sun An National Engineers Week, February 19-25 Engineering is the art of applying scientific and mathematical principles, experience, judgment, and common sense to create or develop new products that benefit people and solve problems. Engineers search for better, less expensive ways to use the forces and materials of nature to meet tough challenges as people encounter them. There are many fields of work within engineering; one of the five largest branches is chemical engineering. Chemical engineers solve problems by creating new products or by using chemicals to connect science and manufacturing. They apply principles of several sciences, such as chemistry and physics, to branches of engineering, including mechanical and electrical engineering. For instance, some chemical engineers are studying ways to desalinate seawater, by removing the dissolved salts, to make the water safe to drink. Other chemical engineers have worked to develop new products, such as the ceramic heat-absorbing tiles for the space shuttle that protect the shuttle during reentry through Earth's atmosphere.
